Talking to "Non"-Readers and Realizing Unpleasant Realities of Book-World Snobbery.

There’s something refreshing about talking to people about reading and books when they are not in any way connected to the academic or literary community.

Deny it all you want, but there’s so much snobbery in the general literary circles that it’s sometimes hard to have a lighthearted conversation before someone starts yelling about how wrong it is to highlight books, about how YA is stupid, evil of e-books, or how literature is dead, and the internet ruined the literary world. And while I’m always ready for a healthy debate, the older I get (especially in internet age) the less I want to deal with it, which is why it’s so great to talk to people who are … unspoiled by all that nonsense.

I dont get it when non-readers come up to me when im enjoying a novel and say "yuck that doesnt even have pictures" like im sorry becky not every book can be filled with pictures for people like you.

Its so frustrating that i dont even know whether i put it in the right words. Smh.

Describing "getting into a book" to people who don't read

Me: when you read do you ever get nervous or anxious and just ffeeelll what the character is feeling?

Non reader: no if it stresses you out that isn't good.

Me: no no, like you just get into the book. Like you feel what the character is feeling.

Non reader: no that doesn't happen to me.

Me: you don't turn into the character and see everything they see or feel what they feel?
