Are we already in Shanghai?
For our last day in Suzhou, we visited Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU). This university is a joint school between Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and Liverpool University in the United Kingdom. The students here were different from the students at Peking University. They had developed a clear understanding of western education and seemed much more relaxed. Ever student I talked to were very interested in what I was doing in the United States and what life was like for me. I had not experienced something like this before this university visits. The students here had a need to go abroad and visit the western world. Their spoken English was much better than anywhere else we had been. It was impressive how much they actually understood while I talked to them. From here, we said our goodbyes and traveled to Opple Lighting. This lighting manufacturer is the main supplier for the biggest lighting market in the world, China. The two main areas I was able to see were the general manufacturing plant and R&D. Their manufacturing process was not entirely automated. They want to, in the future, be almost completely automated. They are efficiently utilizing their employees and only keeping the steps with human interaction because they are needed. There R&D building was fairly massive. They are constantly building full-scale fixtures and testing them on the potential market. They are an international company and hope to continue to become a more global company.
After the Opple Lighting visit, we drove to Shanghai, our final destination. My immediate impression of Shanghai: absolutely remarkable. The infrastructure was amazing and so massive. It is hard to imagine how immense these cities are until you are actually in one. Shanghai has brand new buildings pretty much everywhere. We saw the scenic skyline on the Bund. The Bund was packed with people. Anyone who is interested in architecture or building design would be blown away from this view. Every building you see has its own style compared to the one next to it.
