The leader of the Syrian opposition made a powerful plea to a reluctant US administration Wednesday for anti-aircraft weapons to end "the nightmare" of civilians under seige from daily barrel bombings. At the start of his first official visit to Washington, Ahmad Jarba told a US think-tank that opposition forces need "efficient weapons to face these attacks including air raids, so we can change the balance of power on the ground." This would "open the door for a real political solution," he insisted, committing his Syrian National Coalition to ensuring that any weapons such as anti-aircraft missiles would not fall into the wrong hands. Equipping the rebels with heavy weapons would both send a powerful signal to the Syrian regime and boost the rebels standing among an increasingly desperate population caught in the crossfire, opposition officials say privately. The Syrian Army looks to be gaining ground in a crucial battle against opposition forces which has significant strategic implications for both sides. Government forces are fighting to retake control of the rebel-held town of Yabroud near the border with Lebanon. Yabroud is the last opposition stronghold in the mountainous Qalamoun region. Whichever side controls Qalamoun can control the motorway from the capital Damascus to the city of Homs and then on to the coastal region of Latakia which is a government-held area. Source: Sky News
The Syrian opposition called on Wednesday for a transitional governing body to be set up that would oversee a total ceasefire under U.N. monitoring, and be empowered to drive out foreign fighters deployed on both sides of the civil war. The confidential paper, seen by Reuters, was presented to international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi and a Syrian government delegation at a joint session held at peace talks in Geneva. It made no mention of the fate of President Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but opposition forces said that he had been ignored on purpose to make clear he had no role. The Syrian government delegation said on Wednesday that negotiations must focus first on fighting terrorism and rejected parallel track talks on the opposition's priority of a transitional government as a "fruitless" idea.
