I didn’t watch the Golden Globes, but I did see Oprah’s entire speech. It was indeed poignant, beautiful, and forceful. That doesn’t mean she should become president. So many- too many- liberals and even activists were calling for her to run. This in my view empowers some of the forces that got Trump into office- this notion that all it takes to lead the country is celebrity status, money, and saying the right thing with no acknowledgement of policy or what this person can do for the country with specifics. While politics has always been a game this attitude only makes it more so.
we have to stop saying stupid shit like “Oprah 2020” or “Michelle Obama 2020” or “Chelsea Clinton 2020” just because we want to put liberal [rich] women in office. Or “Mark Zuckerburg 2020” because he’s rich and nominally liberal. In theory these people can be great (in practice I don’t think any of them are) but we shouldn’t push powerful people to run without fully knowing their ideas or else we are just promoting an ethos that will create a “liberal” version of Trump. I personally believe we shouldn’t push any powerful person to run since the odds are they do not have the poor and middle class’s best interests, to be clear on my personal opinions.
Let us not be ruled by the tyranny of low standards. Everyone I mentioned is “better” than Trump, but that’s not the bar we should be aiming for. We have to raise our standards for who we elect or else we are fucking doomed. The elite have always run the show; replacing a far right elitist with a “liberal” elite is not doing anything radical. Let’s not replace one multi-billionaire/millionaire with another. You can’t call that progress with a straight face. Do better.
All I'm gonna say...
Oprah Winfrey can and will become the second African American and the first woman to be elected United States President in 2020.
She will do amazing things.
How do liberals thing switching one ultra rich celebrity personality for another going to change anything?! Fucking wild.
On Oprah 2020
I really liked Oprah’s speech at the Golden Globes. And more than anything, I loved seeing how deeply and genuinely moved and inspired the women in the crowd were as she spoke.
As a result, many liberals have expressed excitement about a potential presidential run for Oprah in 2020.
Personally, I’d vote for Oprah. Granted, I’d vote for some no-name college professor from Mississippi. In the end, I’m voting for the person with the candidate with the best policy platform.
If Oprah runs, I look forward to seeing hers.
