Who wants to hear about me? I’m boring. Instead, here are ten facts/insights that are interesting:
Despite being commonly thought of as the inventors of the airplane, the Wright Brothers did not in fact invent the airplane itself. They were just one of many groups working along similar lines at the time and not even the first to make a flight. What the Wright Brothers did invent, however, was arguably far more important. They invented the study of aeronautics. That is to say, they invented the engineering of flight, defining the basic principles of aeronautics that remain essentially the same to this day.
The cells in our body have only a finite lifespan. On average all the cells in our body are replaced (albeit in a pre-aged state) every seven to ten years.
Despite popular myth, it is thought that the bulk of the workers on the Great Pyramids were not slaves, but farmers who volunteered their time during the off-seasons. The motivation for their hard labor came less from whips and threats and more from the idea that a Pharaoh (being the living embodiment of a god) that was well preserved in his pyramid would be able to secure a place in the afterlife for all those who served him. Thus it was in the workers favor to work hard for their Pharaoh.
It is entirely possible that we all see colors differently, due to the fact that our eyes all have different numbers of rods and cones in small degree. But, because we are taught from childhood that a certain wavelength of light is, for example “blue” we never question what that “blue” might look like with a different set of eyes.
It is very likely that birds rather than lizards are the living descendants of dinosaurs. While there is still much controversy over the subject, the discovery of what could be early feathers on several dinosaurs along with many biological similarities between two suggest that birds are very closely related. In many ways birds are modern dinosaurs.
The recording and playback of sound does not require electricity. Before the days of household electrical systems and electric motors, record players would be hand-cranked to wind a spring which would provide the needed power to turn the cylinder or disk.
We imagine a higher life form being one made of pure energy… but if matter is made of energy then… aren’t we pure energy?
Most of the volume you take up is empty space. On a atomic level, there are vast gulfs between the atoms that make up nearly everything we can experience. If it weren’t for the energy that binds them together (and thus makes them solid) it would be possible for two objects to pass through each other with little trouble.
Considering that all matter is energy and that solid objects aren’t really solid, what really separates us from anything else? We are patterns of energy, our computers are patterns of energy, the air we breath is a pattern of energy. Even an empty room is still full of air, which is matter, which is energy. The universe is a soup of energy in an every flowing pattern, how much are we truly separated from it?
If ever anyone tells you to “get moving” you can casually remark to them that the Earth rotates at 1,670 kilometers an hour (or about 1,070 mph), it revolves around the Sun at 107,278.87 kilometers and hour (66,660 mph) and that the Sun with all in tow around the Milky Way at 792,000 kilometers an hour (483,000 mph) and the Milky Way itself is moving at an estimated 2.1 million kilometers an hour (1.3 million mph). Whatever you add probably won’t make that much of a difference ;D
Finally, rather than just taking the top ten blogs on my following list, I’ll simply open this up to anyone who reads this and wants to post ten interesting things. About themselves, about the world, the universe, an alternate universe, whatever. Just keep it interesting and keep your brains working :)
