Day Eight Ghost Hunting
A crash rang throughout the house followed by a scream. Jackie stood up and turned to see Chase staring at a knocked over vase. “Are you ok?”
“It moved on its own!” Chase shouted, still shaking.
Jackie sighed and walked over to his friend. “Chase it’s all in your mind. You must have bumped into the table.”
Chase nodded and walked into the middle of the room. “I’ll just stay over here for now.”
Jackie laughed and zoomed in on the vase with his camera. “Chase it’ll be ok. I’ll get some film for our channel and we can leave. We’re not going to find anything.”
Chase whimpered and turned around. “I heard something.”
“Ok well, let’s distract ourselves. Chase, can you tell us the history of this house. I think we’ve done a good intro.”
Chase wrung his hands together and sighed. “Yeah, uh, in the twenties a murderer lived in the house. He would bury his victims in the yard and under the floorboards. The police were soon called because the neighbours got suspicious of him and he was arrested. Apparently, he had a roommate who was shot as the murderer tried to run. They say his roommate haunts this house with the murderer's victims. They say he’s very upset with his roommate and believes anyone that enters the house is him.”
Jackie nodded and giggled quietly. “And they were roommates,” he whispered.
Chase snorted. “I don’t know if the ghost will appreciate that.”
Jackie shrugged. “He isn’t real. I mean come on how did you not realize that your roommate was burying bodies in the backyard.”
Chase shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“Hey bro I’m home! Cool bro, I’m just digging in the garden. Cool, have fun!”
Chase doubled over laughing. “I hate you.”
Jackie shrugged. “I’m funny though.”
Chase nodded and walked back over to the table. “So this was his bedroom. Uh, let's call the roommate Ricky.”
“Ricky?”
“Yeah, the names have been blacked out. Or it’s just rumoured. It could just be a story kids tell to scare people. It is strange that the house was abandoned though.”
Jackie nodded, happy his partner wasn't as afraid. Apparently nerding out helped him. “So Ricky slept in here. Unaware his roommate was stabbing people in the other room. Though it doesn't really appear to be lived in.”
Jackie whistled. “Maybe they were more than roommates.”
Chase groaned. “Jackie no.”
“Jackie, yes!”
Chase watched as Jackie left the room. He sighed and followed him down the hall and into the other bedroom. “This place looks more lived in.”
Chase nodded. “The house hasn't been touched since. It’s just been abandoned. Too many bad vibes.”
“Wait then that means the roommate knew. If they were dating I mean.”
Chase blinked. “They were both murderers?”
‘No.’
Jackie jumped and stared at the spirit box in Chase's hand.
“I didn’t turn it on,” Chase whispered.
‘I never hurt.’
Chase threw the spirit box across the room. It landed on the bed and bounced. ‘Anyone.’
Jackie stepped over to Chase and gripped his arm. “Are you recording?”
“Yes.” Chase squeaked.
‘It wasn’t supposed to end.’
“What wasn't supposed to end?” Jackie asked.
‘That way.’
Chase nodded. “It wasn't supposed to end that way?”
‘He would have died.’
Jackie nodded. “Your roommate?”
‘Husband.’
Jackie gulped. “So you?”
‘Jumped in front.’
“You jumped in front of him. You took the bullet. But you knew he hurt people.” Jackie said, his voice rising.
‘No.’
“He killed people.”
“Jackie I don’t think-”
‘Deserved it.’
Chase sucked in a breath. “They deserved it?”
The spirit box continued to play static. Chase tugged at Jackie's arm. “Let's get out of he-”
Chase yelped when he felt someone push him. He fell into Jackie, yelping. Jackie fell with him and they hit the ground together. Jackie stared at Chase and laughed nervously. “Hi,” he whispered.
Chase blushed and moved to get up. Jackie gripped his arm and sighed. “Hey, Chaser I-”
Chase gripped Jackie's collar and pulled him in for a kiss. Jackie pulled him closer, gripping the back of his head and running his fingers through his hair.
‘Still here.’
Chase jumped and got to his feet quickly. “Sorry!”
Chase helped Jackie stand up and laughed. “We should leave.”
‘You two are cute.’
Chase blushed. “Wait, did you?”
“We just got together because of a goddamn ghost!” Jackie shouted.
‘JJ.’
“JJ?” Chase asked.
‘Name.’
“Oh thank you.”
‘Bye.’
Jackie nodded and grabbed Chase's hand, leading him to the door. “Goodbye JJ thanks for the story and for helping us.”
~`~`~
JJ smiled at the two and sighed. At least someone got a happy ending he thought. He stood up, getting off the bed. He floated out of the room and disappeared.
