watched sucker punch for the first time in a while last night and was wondering why everyone creamed their pants for inception but shat on sucker punch. and like i know that movie isn’t some deep and poetic epic but it wasn’t meant to be.
and i realized it’s probably because inception has only 2 female characters (written by nolan though so like...) and is otherwise filled with male power fantasies while sucker punch only has Oscar Isaac as Blue (who is a gross creep)
and i’m not here to talk about if it’s good or whether the costumes are empowering or sexist (which was a big discourse when it came out) but it’s fun and the aesthetic is great (another thing it got criticized for. because the anime/video game style fight scenes were “unrealistic.” like yeah. they’re literally in the girl’s head. duh) and it has a banger soundtrack
and anyways i’ve spent enough time working in fandom to know that a lot of men inherently look for problems (whether they realize it or not. and also some women) with female or poc or minority driven projects that they otherwise wouldn’t if it was a typical white dude circle jerk and it shows.
