Cold Sweat

Lime awakens to the sound of Orange whimpering.

She pauses, taken aback, but she heard it right the first time. Orange shivers under the heat of her fever, breathing wheezy and uneven, though thankfully Lemon supplied some medicine to stop her from coughing every few minutes. Her lungs still carry some rasp, though, and it seeps into her whines, making them all the sharper.

It's an odd sound. Orange is usually so full of peppy energy that thinking of her being afraid... it makes Lime's heart twist. That's been a common theme this week, what with Orange's improbable cold—they've all had to take care of the one who usually carries them all instead.

(No, not had to. That implies it was a chore. Helping comfort Orange is a blessing.)

Carefully, as not to scare her, Lime turns over and wraps her arms around Orange. She's so getting her cold, but whatever—that's worth it. All the fevered sneezing and tedium is nothing compared to this precious moment. Together, bodies tangled in gentle warmth, they relax in a moment reserved for them alone.

That's how Lime falls back asleep—listening to Orange's steady heartbeat, breathing in her fresh, tangy scent.
