Orca squinted down at what appeared to be, for all intents and purposes, a human. Before the shut-down of the park, she used to be at least semi-social with humans but now she was bitter, and mistrustful.

“What do you want?”

Venus, who clung to her arm like a lifeline, frowned. “Orca. He hasn’t even said anything. You could be nicer.”

Merfolk au but instead of the witchers being shark mers they're killer whale mers! It's esp fitting bc they're already called the wolves of the sea and they're bigger and badder than sharks which just screams witcher to me! (And maybe they can do the whole 'outside of water develop legs' thing bc the sea where Kaer Morhen dried up and they had to adapt, so they can still hunt monsters on land)

Jaskier's a bard from his dinky little Kerack manor who's always been drawn to the sea and then he meets Geralt

that idea of transformation like that sortve puts me in the mind of selkies, honestly! maybe these special killer whale merfolk shed their fins on land.

also i cant recall if this is canon, but i do remember quite a few fics saying that "very long ago, the seas used to cover the blue mountains", so its at least not outside the realm of fanon that kaer morhen was home to these ancient seafolk before the oceans receeded-- and the castle could even be, like, old dried up coral structures too, instead of something man-made! (i dont know enough about ocean life to know how exposure to the non-sea elements would effect it, beyond "it gets rather dry and rather dead", but its still interesting to think about, especially in a fantasy world)

natures way of keeping balance, a part of the food chain, a predator that predates on giant ocean monsters and megafauna, slowly forced to adapt to the land as well, as waters dry up and ocean monsters become more scarce.

they're few and far between these days, and dont take kindly to people(sometimes they'll show up in a town, asking around to try and assess what creature is ailing them, but they're just as likely to skirt along the edges and just inspect footprints n' such to draw their own conclusions). but then there's geralt, who's always been curious about people by his kind's standards. tends to edge closer to villages, rather than away. even when his eyes and his teeth and his claws(which dont change like his tail when he slithers out of the water) earn him screams

and there's jaskier, maybe a little spoiled, and definitely a lot stifled, who knows the sea-- and indeed the world-- is so much more than the little slice he's been trapped in, relegated to by his parents and the circumstances of his birth. he wants something new, something exciting, and the absolutely untethered nature of these sea folk enraptures him

they're both curious things, the way they circle each other, geralt drawn forward by jaskier's singing, and jaskier by the simple promise of something new. something bigger than home

Where are they going? Why have they surrounded a bottlenose? Why are half of them upside down? Why do they have such old man eyes? Why does the background look like a shitty PBS greenscreen?? (false killer whales, bottlenose dolphin as well)

Why can I see your ribs? Why is your head Like That? If this animal were a person they’d kick my ass via wrestling. Look at those muscles. (rough toothed dolphin)
