10 Dead, 20 Wounded In Oregon Community College Shooting
According to officials and local media, a gunman opened fire at a community college killing 10 people and wounding 20 others in south-western Oregon Yesterday.
There were conflicting reports on the number of casualties and wounded at Umpqua Community College. The state’s attorney general told the local NBC affiliate that 13 people had been slain, 20 wounded and the shooter was killed.
The police first received a call about an active shooter in a classroom in the college just after 10:30 a.m. local time. They arrived and exchanged gunfire with the shooter and later said he’d been ‘neutralized.
The suspect was not identified but was said to be in his late 20s.
The college which in a remote location, was put on lock-down and the students and staff were evacuated.
According to law enforcement, yesterday the shooter was online talking to others about what he was going to do. Investigators are currently looking at his social media posting. And he was familiar with the building and knew where he was going.
The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in the United States, raising demands for more gun control and more effective treatment of the mentally ill. Recent episodes of gun violence include the massacre of nine people at a South Carolina church last spring and the killing of five U.S. servicemen in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
