“Prickly” Written by (O. Lomena) Prioduced by (Insightful) “I rap for listeners” begins the first verse of “Memory Lane” off of Nas’s iconic “Illmatic”. The four-word sentiment is one that Oren L. (fka Champion Sound Killa Black) of The Foodchain has emulated his entire career. And as a member of one of Denver’s most notable hip-hop collectives to date, the emcee now known simply as Oren L., has spent his music career doing just that. With a style best described as word paths and rhyme schemes that wind complex and yet ever so poignantly, ending often in blunt realism, Oren L. often plays with vocabulary but rarely minces words. With his first solo effort entitled “BS|BS|BC”, the artist’s approach is both made evident and driven home emphatically right out of the gate. "Prickly serves as the opening track on the project and sets the tone for an introspective and cathartic collection of music. Produced by Insightful, the track sets the tone off top and bangs with a composition that begs for depth in any accompanying vocals. Oren L doesn't disappoint, delivering a stark and revealing tale of early loss and the emptiness that follows. Throughout the 14-track journey the listener is taken on an emotional and cathartic ride that touches on everything from womanizing to alcohol abuse, death and suicide to the love of music and family. Though base and trap heavy in it’s production, a break from the current trend of saying nothing in pursuit of the “turn up” won’t be found on this project.
