It's alive. Yes, really! 1 gram of soil contains billions of micro-organisms. Why does that matter?
These micro-organisms break down organic matter to its more base chemical components for themselves and in tandem for plant life. A soil high in organic matter (think more than 3% but less than 10%) is better at the infiltration and retention of water, has a higher CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity), and maintains better clods (clumps of soil that are fused together with bio-glues from micro-organisms).
Soil is also mineral matter! When we are describing the textural class of soil we use language like "Sandy, Silty, Clayey, Loamy" and combinations there of. Soil is texturally made up of differently size particles with sand being the largest, clay being the smallest, and silt being somewhere in the middle. Textural class tells us about the potential formation of the soil, its bulk density, how well water infiltrates through it, and how it is potentially interacting with the environment.

"Since landing in Jezero crater a few years ago, Perseverance has traversed a series of rocks formed nearly four billion years before present. Mars back then was far more habitable than the cold, dry, toxic red planet of today.
There were thousands of rivers and lakes, a thick atmosphere, and comfortable temperatures and chemical conditions for life. Many of the rocks in Jezero are sedimentary: mud, silt and sand dumped by a river flowing into a lake.
The new discovery concerns one of these rocks. Informally named "Cheyava Falls" (a waterfall in Arizona), it is a small reddish block of what looks like a mudstone, enriched with organic molecules. The rock is also laced with parallel white veins. Between the veins are millimeter-scale whitish spots with dark rims. For an astrobiologist, all these features are intriguing."
5/4/24 ~ Some new stuff I’m using this year. I’ve never used Coco Coir before today & I loooove it! So much product in a compact lil brick! And it’s repurposed natural material, so win win. I still used a little bit of my seed starting mix to mix in with it just because that’s all I know 😅😆
But I’m learning about the different medias/compost for planting!
I also got a bag of worm castings. Mixed some of it in there as well. We shall see how it does!
