Yard Waste

We hosted teachers and students from Harlem Prep Middle School, as part of their Day of Service, at the community garden. They assisted us with spring cleaning, weeding and planting vegetables seeds.

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will temporarily suspend curbside composting service beginning on Monday, May 4, 2020. The suspension is currently planned through June 30, 2021. During this time, residents are asked to discard food scraps and yard waste with their trash. Residents with questions about their collection schedules should contact 311.

Why is curbside composting service being suspended?

On March 12, 2020, Mayor De Blasio declared a state of emergency in New York City in response to the global pandemic of COVID-19. The City has been required to divert all necessary resources to aid in the COVID-19 relief efforts. This crisis, and the resulting decrease in economic activity, have forced the City to make significant budget cuts to maintain emergency services and core municipal services. This suspension allows the City to divert resources to emergency COVID-19 response efforts.

What should I do with my food scraps and yard waste while curbside composting service is suspended?

Residents should discard food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste with their trash. Trash should be put out for collection in securely tied heavy-duty bags or leak proof receptacles with tightly fitting lids. Residents should set out their material at the curb after 4 p.m. but before midnight the evening before their collection day.

Where can I take my food scraps and yard waste during the curbside composting service suspension?

All Food Scrap Drop-off Sites have been temporarily suspended as they require the public to leave their homes, which is against the social distancing recommendations put into place by the NYS Governor, NYC Mayor, and Health Departments. Once conditions allow for public gathering, DSNY will determine the feasibility of reopening certain Food Scrap Drop-off Sites.
