Stars in their multitude...
I've finally faced up to the need to continue my star diary. At the beginning of the year I started to make an origami star for each day. I write inside each star - the date, the day, and something that's personal to me, then tie it into a simple flat knot that effectively forms a pentagon. The short tail is tucked in, and the long tail goes over and over until the pentagon is nice and chubby. The end is tucked in, and now for the magic - from 2D to 3D - puffing the pentagon into a star-shape by pinching each side. If none of that makes sense, I'm sure there is a video out there somewhere about making them. The final touch is to write the date again on the outside of the star, and a face - happy, sad, confused or indifferent - to represent the feelings of the day. I have a different colour for each month, arranged in pots. There's definitely an instagram pic there, when I get to the end of the year. Hat tip Ellie for suggesting I get an Instagram account, btw. The original idea for the stars came from a party I went to about 25 years ago. At the party there was a jar holding the door open, and in the jar were hundreds of these stars. I asked the host (I think it was Ian Sycamore or one of his friends) if I could take one of the stars to bits and work out how to make one - remember this is the days before the internet - I couldn't just google it! There's been a hiatus, for want of a better word, in the last 6 weeks for reasons which I might allude to, but will never fully write about. But I'm back on track (to use another Ian-related allusion - this time a song - check my songoftheday tweets on thejohnbeswick for that). I made 8 stars tonight, from 13 to 20 October. If I can do 8 stars per night, in 6 days I'll be totally up to date. In the whole year there have only been a couple of days that I've been totally up to date, and I didn't even start on the 1st of Jan - I only committed to trying to do stars for every day from about the 6th of Jan. Anyway, wish me luck, inkernet (that's what Dawn from the Dawn and Drew calls you; I call you the inkernet for other reasons). J.
