Choujikuu Seiki Orguss 02
Super Dimension Century Orguss 02 - character design by Haruhiko Mikimoto and Toshihiro Kawamoto / Newtype magazine (09/1993)
1991-1995 Anime Primer Orguss 02 (1993)
On an alternate version of Earth, hostilities between the nations of Revillia and Zafrin threaten to erupt as each side scrambles to salvage the most Decimators—robotic weapons of unknown origin that nearly drove mankind to extinction two centuries earlier. The gears of fate begin to move when Lean, a naive but capable young mechanic, reluctantly joins the Revillian army under the dubious wing of the scheming Lieutenant Manning. After being abandoned behind enemy lines, Lean must instead ally himself with Nataruma, a Zafrin deserter desperate to escape her role as a living instrument of war. The secret behind her potent psychic powers and alien heritage holds the key to unlocking the mystery of the Decimators and establishing peace, but it may already be too late to pull the world back from the brink of mutual destruction.
While ostensibly a sequel to the 1983 television series Super Dimension Century Orguss, Orguss 02’s story and setting are independent enough that a lack of familiarity with its predecessor isn’t an obstacle to enjoyment. Written and directed by Fumihiko Takayama (who helmed the similarly sobering spin-off Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket), this six-part OVA is as notable for its smart dialogue, somber tone and detailed world-building as it is for its mecha action. Original Orguss collaborators Studio Nue and Haruhiko Mikimoto join new talent Toshihiro Kawamoto and Torsten Rasch to create slick visuals and eclectic audio that compliment this creatively unconventional production.
