In some shintou shrines you can find two shrine guardians (komainu 狛犬) one with an open mouth, and the other with a closed mouth. At the gate of Buddhist temples, you can two guardian ( Niou 仁王 two kings) in these same poses. “A” and “un” represent the beginning and the end of all things, or inhalation and exhalation respectively]
