Ludwig Deutsch came from a well-to-do Jewish family in Vienna and studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. In 1878, he moved to Paris to study with noted Orientalist painter Leopold Carl Müller. Two years later, Deutsch settled in Paris permanently; after gaining French citizenship in 1919, he began to refer to himself as Louis Deutsch.

Much of Deutsch's subject matter, such as the painting seen here, was based upon his trips to Egypt in the 1880s and 1890s. (From 1882 onward, the Khedivate of Egypt, nominally an autonomous state within the Ottoman Empire, was in fact a British protectorate.) Deutsch brought back many Egyptian objects that he would use time and again as props in his genre scenes and portraits.

After some iuatus here there is the new part of this well beloved series!

It took me sometime before finding all the material and the images for this new project, but here we are!

As I said in my story in this new serie I will explore most, but not all, of the most important places of Essos and the first location is Braavos.

The layout for this new fashion studies will folow the one I used for the Lys/Old Valyria studies, so instead of some big families, I will explore the many social ranks of the city.

For this reason I decided to draw some key figures:

 a Moonsinger, a noble woman, a courtesan, the Sealord, a First Sword and a magister.

Essos Fashion Studies: Braavos

"Braavos is the wealthiest and likely the most powerful of the Free Cities.It is located in the Great Lagoon on the northwestern end of Essos, where the narrow sea and the Shivering Sea meet. Braavos is also known as Braavos of the Hundred Isles and the Secret City, a name also attributed to the city Nefer, the last remaining city of N'ghai.  Braavos is sometimes referred to as the "bastard daughter of Valyria"

Bathed in the golden languor of an eastern afternoon, two women recline amid silks and embroidered carpets while a musician's melody drifts across the sea-lit terrace. The painter creates a scene of luxury, indolence, and quiet longing, where beauty itself seems suspended in time.

Interesting detail : Benjamin-Constant never painted the Orient as a strict documentary record. Like many Orientalist artists of the 19th century, he blended observations from his travels in Morocco with imagination, creating sumptuous scenes designed to evoke mystery, romance, and exotic splendor for European audiences.

This is an allegorical painting that shows a poet surrounded by dreamlike figures, muses, and symbols of inspiration. It explores the relationship between imagination and artistic creation, suggesting that poetry comes from both dreams and intellectual awakening. Ferrier created the work as part of the academic art tradition popular in late nineteenth-century France, and it was later used as a decorative mural design for the Sorbonne in Paris.
