6 with Cophine please!
Sleeping above her parents bakery is pleasant most evenings, except when her parents are fighting. Delphine lies in her bed in the cramped loft apartment, her pillow over her ears as warm tears trail down her cheeks.
They’d only been in America a couple of months, Delphine enjoying finally being happy. She’s made friends at school, friends she doesn’t want to leave like she did to those in France. She hears a pan clatter to the tile floor, her father storming upstairs as Delphine quickly tries to appear asleep.
The door creaks open, light peeking into the small room. Her father leans against the door,
“I know you’re awake, Delphine,” he sighs. Delphine clutches her sheets, wanting her father to leave, to let her hold on to the memories she’s preparing herself to lose.
“Delphine-” he tries again.
“Leave, Papa. I won’t speak of moving until the morning, it makes me too upset,” she sniffles, burying her face deeper into her pillow. Delphine sees his shadow nod in the low light, with that he leaves her as he shuts the door behind himself.
Getting out of bed the next morning is harder than she anticipates it to be. She hears pots and pans moving, oven doors opening and shutting, the door chime ringing. Delphine isn’t ready to let all of this go. Her mother calls her down to help her with customers, but when she plasters on her fake smile expectantly, there’s no one in front of the counter.
“Mama?” she calls out, poking her head into the storage room.
“In here!” her mother responds from the kitchen. She’s surprised to see her classmate from school in their bakery since she’s vegetarian, much less their kitchen. Cosima waves weakly, nervous as to what she’s gotten herself into.
“Cosima,” Delphine says anxiously, “what are you doing here?” She opens her mouth to respond to Delphine, but her mother cuts her off.
“I told Papa to tell you last night,” her mother mutters. Delphine’s face flushes, realizing this must’ve been what they were yelling about, and what her father came to her room to explain.
“Oh, I was asleep, I think he left me be,” she mutters. Cosima smiles shyly when she meets Delphine’s gaze, then back to the floor. The front door rings, leaving the two of them alone in the kitchen.
“First thing I’m so so sorry for being here, I told them that-” Cosima begins before she realizes Delphine isn’t listening, she’s concentrated on something else. She mumbles to herself but Cosima can’t catch it, she asks her to repeat herself.
“I don’t want you to leave me,” she sniffles.
“Why would I leave you? I work here now, we both go to school together, there’s no way-”
“I don’t want to leave America.”
“You’re moving? You- you just got here! We haven’t even gone to the zoo yet and made fun of the tourists taking pictures of monkeys!” Cosima says in disbelief. Delphine chuckles, taking Cosima’s hands in hers.
“You will always be my cheeky monkey, Cosima. No matter how many zoos I visit or places I move to.”
Cosima smiles, looking down, her cheeks tinted pink. She tilts her head back up, her hands un-linking from Delphine’s to explain why she’s here.
“I’m just confused as to why your family is moving when they just hired me, and when their shop is doing so well.”
“It is?” Delphine looks at Cosima quizzically, unaware of the shops well being. Cosima laughs, taking Delphine by the hand.
“I really don’t think you’re moving,” she pauses, pressing Delphine against the cabinet, “and if you were,”
Delphine blinks, confused, eyes darting down to Cosima’s lips.
“I would’ve done this a long time ago,” she whispers, softly placing her lips on Delphines. Her body tenses, unsure of why Cosima’s doing this, but not the fact that she is. Oh, Cosima is kissing her. Cosima Niehaus is kissing her. She smiles, cupping Cosima’s cheeks, returning the kiss eagerly.
“Also,” Cosima says, breaking the kiss briefly, “I told your parents I baked, and I don’t think they understood the context.”
“I’ll have to teach you how to then,” Delphine laughs, pulling Cosima into another kiss. When they both separate to breathe, Cosima grabs a spoon, raising her eyebrows mischievously.
“Yeah, I’d like that.”
