It has been hours since this taughting rejoinder but it haunts him.

A crush, according to the dictionary, was something that happened when one developed affection for someone unobtainable or inappropriate.

It was distracting him from his work. Did he have some sort of obvious affection for Pappy? Was he going to let someone tell him who he could and could not obtain?

How would he know if he had these nebulous feelings? He cared for his brother he knew, but it was more of a memory of caring - a duty at this point then any feeling he could name.

Being level twenty separated him from people, created an emotional distance. Any number after it was superficial at best in terms of LOVE. Every number before it a measurement of your ability to care.

He knew he was lucky in some regaurds as being an integrity soul had allowed him to retain a sense of self that many did not.

He knew he felt an obligation towards Pappy, knew he wanted to utilize him to further his own goals. Pappy was not altogether disagreeable. But beyond that...

He did not know.

What he did not know could be used against him.

Not just by people who wanted to see the Monster Government fall to ruin, not just by those who wanted to see Orpheus fail... But even Pappy could use this against him if he wanted and Orpheus did not keep his gaurd up.

Then there was the competitive angle. Orpheus loved to win. He knew he was the best version of himself. If he did care for Pappy, and Pappy for him, then he obviously had to do a better job of courting him then he was courted in turn.

But how did he figure this out?

Sweetie, Phe, loving someone isn't a contest. Even if it were, Pappy would easily win

Orpheus expression twitches. There's the knee-jerk reaction of not wanting to lose at anything and the rush of confusion because who was speaking about love?

Did... Pappy love him? That seemed absurd, but if it were true, Pappy was indeed already winning.

He had much to think about.

"Get out of my office."

Phe, it's ok to say you've fallen for the man. :>

Orpheus looks over his glasses in disapproval. "I have not lost to Pappy in any sense. Nor do I think he has set any traps for me to fall into. If he has, and I have not noticed them, that speaks volumes of their quality, and I expect better out of him if he wishes to challenge me."

What's Phe think of Pappy thus far? Has their opinion changed any from when they initially met them?

Orpheus looks up from his mound of paperwork and squints over his glasses at the question. After a moment he seems to decide its worth responding.

Setting down his pen, he clasps his hands on the desk. "I have use for him now. Moreover, I see now that he is no threat to me." He grins, is expression seems self satisfied for a moment as though he had phrased himself to be deliberately goading.

The expression fades as he considers his next words. "When we initially met, I saw him as a challenge to be overcome. A measuring stick for myself, yes, but also someone who would interfere with... things that do not concern him."

Orpheus does not elaborate but continues, "Now I know he will, but I will utilize his energy to more productive pastimes."

He pauses, thinks for a moment, and then nods to himself. "I believe I have answered sufficiently."

It was a chilly day outside - chilly but beautiful. Across the mountain of course the trees were still an unyielding green, but down in the valley where Fell Springs resided? The leaves had turned to vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold.

All of that was lost on Orpheus as he checked through his calendar. According to his notes... it had been over a year since he had last seen his brother. That was the only significance he gave the turning of the season.

Enough was enough.

If his brother would not come crawling back to him, he would simply have to hunt him down and drag him back.

As soon as his will resolved he was in motion, exchanging his perfectly tailored red suit for his black armor and red half cloak. He grabbed the dimension-hopper that he had some time ago forced Alphys to create for him, and set the coordinates to the only timeline he knew for a fact his brother had visited.

Background history

Pre fall of the human

Papyrus was raised in the orphanage and his brother - a brother he didn’t know he had - was the highlight of his life.

Second only to being apprenticed to THE Undyne. Captain of the guard. Enforcer of Law and Peace. Iron fist of the King.

Papyrus as a kid always wanted to be a boss monster. To be like the idea of Undyne.

To be strong enough to do good. To lead. To make a noticeable impact on the well-being of his fellow monster.

But the older he got the more the real world impugned upon his naive beliefs on how to go about doing that.

Might makes right. Gives the ability to lead.

Undyne wanted to make a warrior out of him, and that’s what she did while his older brother watched helpless to stop what he could see happening to Papyrus.

At age 12 Papyrus made his first kill - a dog his apprentice master had allowed him to have the two years he’d been with her.

After that he steadily went through the ranks in the guard gaining Love and Levels, slowly losing humanity - the ability to actually care.

What keeps him going, what his primary motivation is, is his integrity - devotion to duty really.

The only thing he truly enjoys, knows how to enjoy, is fighting.

2. Post pacifist

When the human arrived he was actively challenging Undyne. With Frisk’s help he was able to defeat her and claim her title of captain of the royal guard.

As captain of the royal guard he is the king’s right hand man he’s in a unique position to run… Basically everything.

He’s the Secretary of War and chief protector of the royal heir (Frisk was adopted by the dreemurrs).

Due to their poor lifestyle especially after moving out of Undyne’s home, he is insistent on providing the better things for his brother as his brother always tried to care for him.

To that end, he channeled a large majority of the reparations payed from the human government to the Royal Family into a stipend for each monster (scaling based on needs and value to the crown).

This allows him to dictate the business practices of monsters.

Dr. Alphys resents this strongly as she wishes to further experiment with souls and that is seen as a pointless avenue of study under Papyrus’ administration.

This causes friction between the two however Papyrus has both the support of the crown and the guard granting him authority and also a tendency to deal with outright disobedience personally.

Since hitting the surface his brother’s behavior and attitude has become concerning and disappointing and Papyrus has attempted to forcibly correct it - making his brother flee the timeline leaving Papyrus feeling abandoned by the one person he thought he could rely on.

While Papyrus tries to convert any multiverse visitor into joining his army, recently he's started remembering resets - which make his work feel fruitless.

Personality

He’s very… Logical. Goal orientated. Demanding.

When he wants something he’ll say my dear name.

He lacks empathy but a large reason he’s what he is is because of his brother so he takes care of him.

Easily angered but prioritizes duty over emotions.
