I don’t mean to be hateful in any way but don’t you hold the webtoon to impossible standards? Orv is an incredibly complex and incredibly long novel, any adaptation will struggle to convey the same story especially with a drawn format where words are limited
I get the frustration with the things it gets wrong but at the same time I don’t see how it could do anything differently without severely overworking their staff and/or budget.
The fans are annoying with their tropes but don’t you find that with every other fandom too? I enjoy your rendition of orv and its dynamics between the characters but at the same time it feels harsh to reduce everything else as mischaracterisation
I think I hold it to the standard of doing justice to the source material, which is what any adaptation should strive for. And that if they chose to adapt a story as complex and nuanced as ORV, then they should either find more elaborate ways to convey that complexity (which is more than realistic), or be open to criticism when they don't.
I don't expect perfection, you'd probably need a deep-sea submersible to find the standards. But the webtoon consistently flattens characters, cuts out whole interactions and dialogues, changes the mood of key scenes, and turns moments that were heavy or introspective into comedy or spoon-fed emotion. And a lot of these changes aren't even necessary for pacing. They're just marketing choices and choices made to appeal to a wider audience or fit a certain tone, even when it undermines the story. Not saying it's an easy job, and I definitely don't think the staff should be overworked, mind you, but that doesn't mean I can't point out where the adaptation falls short. Whoever is responsible for the script and the map out created this problem by choosing to adapt the story in a way that prioritizes quantity and marketability over quality and faithfulness, and I think it's fair to side eye that, is it not now?
Yes, every big fandom has its issues, and I've never said ORV is uniquely bad. But I talk about this fandom because this is where I am and this is what I engage with, and I'm not going to stay quiet just because other fandoms are also messy as fuck. Obviously when I see people preferring shallow fanon over canon, treating the characters like they're just interchangeable yaoi tropes, and turning the story into something it's not, I'm not going to pretend that's fine. If someone seriously can look at that and go "this is in no way a mischaracterization, and I'm absolutely fine with what I'm seeing!", then good for them, but that won't be me. And I'm ready to go over the same topic again and again because the situation is just that bad, and it really needs to be talked about more instead of trying to sweep it under the rug.
Although I don't think we should just dump all the fandom brain death problems onto the webtoon, when I say that it's the mischaracterization buffet, I mean it. Can you really look at the webtoon version of YJH or KDJ and tell me with a straight face that those are the same characters from the novel and not their temu knockoffs (same with the most fanon-propagated version of them)? They're flatter, simpler, and more palatable versions made to fit a visual format and a broader audience that typically dwells in those genres. I'm not just being harsh for the sake of it.
So no, I don't think I hold the webtoon to impossible standards. I don't think I'm being unfair. I don't think my bluntness makes me mean or rude, but simply someone who cares about the story enough to speak up. And I'm sorry, but I'm not going to feel bad about "bullying" a multi-billion dollar global enterprise. I'm pretty sure they'll survive my criticism^^
The difference between the orv novel and the webtoon is that the webtoon is an adaptation. It’s a recreation of a story told in a different way
It will get things wrong, it will miss things but inevitably it’s trying to convey the same thing. It may be my own timeline but I have come across a few novel purists who claim that the novel is the only right and correct way to grasp the story and while it is the most effective, I don’t think the webtoon should be entirely discredited
It’s a MILLION WORD novel, of course they’re going to boil things down, of course people are going to make generalisations or fit the characters into their own tropes and get things wrong. Is it still the same story? Yes, just told in a different way
Admittedly I felt the same way about the webtoon at first, but the more I looked at it the more I realised that trying to have an incredibly large story be conveyed in a complex way is EXTREMELY difficult and should be treated as such.
The webtoon shouldn’t be used as *absolute* canon, but it’s still a rendition of a well loved story. You can still read orv through the webtoon
Orv webtoon and promo arts/merch they make is not canon. Do you know that? It's important to me that you know that.
As much as I love ORV, adaptions won’t hold a candle to the actual novel
Not just because of the differences in media, if anything I enjoy the webtoon just as much as the novel, just separately. The issue is censorship and length
There’s so many themes, especially in the first part of the novel that won’t make it past censorships that leave blanks in development and with the sheer length of orv, it’s impossible to try and break it down into consumable chunks without turning it into one piece
I’m still excited for the anime. I can enjoy the different takes on my favourite novel, my only issue with it is the misconceptions it creates in the fandom
