POERTY OF PATRIOTISM

Written earlier this year in response to the death of Osama Bin Laden.

At 12:56 am on May the 2nd, two men flail wildly from a lamppost on the corner of Church and Vessey St, New York City. The once crisp night air is flooded by the shrieks and songs of thousands in the exact place where so many ran from the billowing carnage of the World Trade Centre ten years before. The men smile and shout, they bear their teeth and spray champagne with a strange mixture of delight and aggression. Osama is dead.

This moment comes 81 minutes after President Obama’s lyrical address to his nation; 81 minutes after the news of an orchestrated murder carried out 10,000 kilometres across the world. Speaking with the clam sobriety of an elegy but the stern severity of an executioner, Obama was watched by 56 million people as he weaved the poetic intricacies of patriotism through the dark finality of a man’s death.

“It was nearly ten years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon…”

His broad shoulders sat in rigid support of his words as his voice modulated willingly for effect. He paused decorously in the drama of it all.

“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.”

People take to the streets to celebrate. They clutch their chests and close their eyes. They chant ‘USA! USA!’ and sing the Star Spangled Banner louder than any school assembly or football match of their lives. In this moment they are proud, fierce and overbearingly American. But are they morally justified?

It is stunning to see the night sky carpeted by American flags. It is spectacular to see pervasive public festivity through the flickering flash of a thousand cameras in time. But it’s also bizarre, confusing and psychologically quite strange to comprehend these actions through the lens of death, war, and revenge.

American Journalist Pamela Gerloff was quick to pose these thoughts after witnessing this anomaly of a night.

“Celebrating the killing of any member of our species … is a violation of human dignity”, she contends.

“The truth is that ‘celebrating justice’ when one person is killed … only incites further desire for revenge, which, from ‘the other side’s’ viewpoint, is usually called ‘justice’.”

Gerloff’s logic is not new. Operating under the same peaceful philosophy as Ghandi, she essentially re-evaluates the worn phrase ‘An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind’.

But can this voice of passivity be heard amongst the cavalcade of cheers that is American nationalism, victory, and pride?

History would suggest not.

American bravado is fostered within the power balances it maintains with or over others. Wars are forged on concepts such as national honour, respect, and dignity. Enemies are made, lives are lost.

Kitty McNeil’s 29 year old son was on the 100th floor of the second tower on September 11th 2001. She is a small unassuming woman with tired eyes. When recently asked about her reaction to the death of Bin Laden she replied with a graceful solemnity distant from the cheers of the New York City streets.

“[I feel] No closure. Relief. Justice. I think I feel like justice has been done, but no closure."

She spoke with a calmness measured by each considered word. She was still hurt, still mourning, still the mother of a victim of a violent war.

Those celebrating on the streets during the early morning of May the second did not have such an intimate experience with death in this way. They watched Obama deliver his speech with a mixture of respect and reverence for the country they live in and all it could perceivably ‘achieve’.

As their President so poetically spun, “Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are: one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

But as loyal patriots grabbed their tattered flags and took to the corner of Church and Vessey St in joy there may have been little thought given to the heartfelt reactions of those like Kitty McNeil. Those who will continue to mourn, continue to hurt, and feel ultimately unsatisfied by an act of violence tainted by the bitter malady of revenge.

Is it just me?

Or is it rather fishy that those Navy Seals that killed Osama were shot down the other day. I'm always suspicious about Government acts. I have a feeling they ( The 33 Seals) knew something SOOO great that the government couldn't have it. (In example JFK)  Maybe they knew that it was bullshit that Osama was dead and that he wasn't killed at all. I mean there were no photos of Osama shown that he was dead. Maybe its a hoax. It is also weird that this is in fact the largest killing since the war started. It just seems like they were trying to kill off the evidence.  Idk Either way R.I.P the 33 of you that passed.
