Kishibe vs Kishibe:
The Tigers
Sally measuring his rival:
The real names of the Tigers and their stage names:
Even though I know all of the Tigers by their nicknames now, I can't tell you everyone's real names except for Julie (but I will get to that)- so here's a little (edit: LONG) post about that and their birthdays and positions if I'm already at it:
Let's start! (going by this poster): Their names are written in rōmaji (surname, name) and kanji (name, "surname"):
Sally: Real name: Shūzū Kishibe/岸部修三. Stage name(s): Osami Kishibe/岸部おさみ and Sally which was inspired by Little Richard's songtitle "Long Tall Sally" (1956) which fits perfectly as Sally is 181 cm tall! In 1975 he changed his surname to Ittoku as suggested by actress Kiki Kirin (then Chiho Yuki, I could write an entire post about her names 😅) Birthday: January 9 1947. Position: Bassist.
The song was also covered by the Beatles and Elvis Presley!
Julie: Real Name: Kenji Sawada/澤田硏二. It's almost written the same way as the version he uses as a star: 沢田研二 expect for the way the second-to-last character is written:
硏 vs 研
Stage name: Julie from actress Julie Andrews as he was a self-proclaimed fan of her. Yuya Uchida (musician, producer, actor and more) recommended him the stage name Ken Sawanoi which Julie refused. Birthday: June 25 1948. Position: Lead Vocalist.
Pee/P: Real name: Minoru Hitomi/瞳みのる, stage name: Pee/P, which I couldn't find out a reason so far. Birthday: September 22 1946 (the oldest!). Position: Drummer.
Toppo: Real name: Katsumi Takahashi/高橋克己, stage name(s): Katsumi Kahashi/加橋かつみ and Toppo by Watanabe Productions due to his "resemblance" to Topo Gigio, an italian puppet character:
Born: February 4 1948. Position: Lead guitarist and vocalist.
Taro: Real name: Taro Morimoto/森本太郎. Stage name: Taro (no actual nickname 😅). Birthday: November 18 1946. Position: guitarist.
Shiro (after Toppo left the band): Real name: Shiro Kishibe/岸部四郎. Stage name: Shiro (also no nickname in the classic sense 😅). Birthday: August 28 1949 (and Sally's younger brother!!). Position: guitarist though he couldn't play it in the beginning.
My main sources were their Japanese wikipedia pages which are very detailed aswell as Julie's English wikipage (only for his nickname source). I translated them with google so there might me mistakes.
You will also notice that there is a LOT more to unpack here and I'm not gonna lie that some stuff kinda shocked me upon first reading it.
But this time, enjoy this introduction and drop your ideas for other name theories or mistakes! 🧡
Ignore the fact that Julie's name is misspelled here 😅
Today I thought about Japanese names again and found out that something similaire happened to other Tigers members:
Sally's birthname Shūzō 修三 includes the kanji 三 which means three and (no) surprise: Sally is the third son of nine (!) children.
And Shiro's real name Shiro 四郎 has the kanji 四, meaning four as he is the fourth son, right after Sally!
