This girl. This shiny girl is the reason I have grey hairs (just a few...) and get no sleep. She is the reason I struggle to wake up in the morning and get to work late. This shiny girl is also the reason I smile so big I almost burst into tears, and laugh so loudly my belly aches. She is one of the reasons I fight the piggy fight so hard ❤️ Just when you think you can't love a tiny creature anymore they throw you a curveball and scare the bajeebas out of you! Moo was at the vets overnight and had us all worried, but another dental later and immediately (literally) she was into the food like you wouldn't believe. Bless. Moo is the reason I hate people who breed satin pigs, and people who discard their piggies like they don't matter, or feel pain, or experience emotion. The piggies are the ones that suffer, and the people who take them in and love them are the ones left crying on the floor feeling absolutely helpless because of an awful disease we cannot do anything about. It's not fair. Tiny shiny Moo is off to the vets tomorrow for her monthly dental procedure. She is doing pretty well and has maintained her weight from her love of baby food and critical care, however she needs a trim as she is having trouble eating her veggies. I've had quite a few messages from our followers who were worried about their piggies after I posted about Moo. I also noticed there is some confusion in discussions about satins, so I wanted to help clear things up a little ☺️ Here are my two other satin piggies, Felix and Sherman. As you can see piggies don't need to be pink-eyed white in order to be satin. Nor do they have to be one single solid colour (Sherman has 3 colours in his fur). In addition, Sherman is 4 and a bit years old - so yes, satins can live to a decent age. However in saying that, Sherman does have OD and his facial X-rays, whilst not as severe as Moo's, aren't great. Fortunately he hasn't had any dental issues yet but his legs are very stiff and he is occasionally placed onto pain relief to manage this. Felix is a little over a year old and hasn't shown any signs yet 🙏🏻 but we are vigilant and keep a close eye on him. I had that tiny glimmer of hope that maybe this year I wouldn't be at the vets between Christmas and New Year...silly me! 🙄 My darling Moo only turned one year this month and is already suffering at the hands of 'Satin Syndrome' 😔. As you can see she is very shiny, despite the fact that both her mum and dad (who were backyard bred before arriving here pregnant) are normal PEW piggies. Satin piggies are at risk of Osteodystrophy, an incurable and painful metabolic bone disease. Satins develop dental problems and gait/arthritis and often require lifelong pain management and dental procedures. The usual age of onset of symptoms is around 18 months, and I have been watching Moo so closely since she was born because I was worried about how satin she was. Moo was born a big, healthy baby yet her development slowed once she hit 800g - her sister Polly, a PEW, had a slow start as she was rejected by their mum, yet she is now over 1kg in weight. Moo will be having her first dental procedure tomorrow along with some full body scans to see if she has any bone issues yet. Please keep her in your thoughts tomorrow.
