He spared just a glance at Osula. She came up beside him, chin nestled into the fur trim of her coat. Tonight was the kind of cold that sunk into bones and stayed there. He really didn’t want to think about the fact that the three of them would have to spend yet another night sleeping outside, with nothing but blankets, clothes, and each other for warmth and shelter.
He looked back up at the moon. The night was so still. “Are you nervous about Zalizinch?”
“Are you?”
Kaifen wrinkled his nose. He hated how she turned everything he asked her back around on him, it was exhausting. Stars were starting to show themselves in the twilight. They were pretty, but they were different here. Wrong. Everything was just slightly shifted from where they should have been. “No. I have nothing to be scared of.”
She smiled. It was patient, but also… smug. “Of course.”
He couldn’t wait to go home.
“Well,” said Osula. “I think I’m nervous.”
Kaifen spared her another glance. One of her hands were in her pocket, fiddling with whatever it was she fiddled with.
“I don’t really know about what. Maybe I’m excited.”
“Excited?” he echoed. “Why? About what?”
“I’ve never been on a train before.” She brought her hand from her pocket and wrapped her arms around her centre. “I’ve also never been to a gang-run city before, either.”
“And you’re excited for that.”
She shrugged. “Sure.”
He really couldn’t believe her sometimes. He huffed and looked back at the sky. “It’s going to be dangerous.”
“It’s going to be fun.”
Kaifen really didn’t know where she was getting her dictionaries from.

Illarion is insecure in his poverty. He sees it as his own failure, his own detriment. He doesn’t understand family wealth, not really, and doesn’t understand that most of the system is designed to keep poor people poor. He’s bored it as a personal failure of himself, of his parents, of whoever came before them. He thinks that doing whatever you can to get to the top is the good and obvious answer.
Osula sees it as a failed system. She isn’t happy with the little she’s got but she’s at peace with it. She wants good food, good friends, and enough to keep her comfortable. To her, comfort and something to do is success. She’s regretful about what she’s done, sees herself as a pathetic lowlife who does nothing but take other people’s comforts for them. But she doesn’t know what else to do.
They balance out each other’s worries. Osula teaches Illarion a way to stop hating himself. It isn’t his own personal failure. He’s okay. And in turn, Illarion, who really doesn’t judge people for their actions sees her thievery as resourceful, as clever. He accepts her for what and who she is. Not just that, he actively celebrates it.
Neither of them are necessarily good people, but they are people, and they bring balance and acceptance to each other that I think they need.
