Light streamed into your bedroom early the next day. You had been so busy thinking and planning late last night, you forgot to close the curtains to your room. You wondered if you could get some kind of auto closing system for them. Bangtan was definitely not hurting for money and you figured they would do just about anything to keep you happy at this point if you asked.
You stretched with your hands above your head and your toes pointed, making a slight moaning noise as you woke up your muscles for the day.
“Well good morning to you too. That was an interesting noise you made, can you make it again?” A man's voice came from the door of your room.
You screamed, sitting straight up, grabbing a pillow and chunking it straight at the direction of the voice.
“Ay that's not very nice. You missed anyways.” The man said in a joking tone.
You had to rub your eyes for a second to get the sleep gunk out of them so you could focus on the man in your doorway. Hobi was there with an empty food tray in his hands, your breakfast neatly placed on your desk. “What the fuck are you doing here and why do you guys keep coming in my room unannounced?” You said rolling your eyes and making no move to get out of your bed.
He chuckled, hands up in surrender, “I wasn’t going to stay long, just dropping off your food. I did knock and you didn’t answer and I didn’t want it to get cold in the hall.” You gave him a look that told him you didn’t believe a word he said, even for a second. “Okay fine.” He said coming back into the room and sitting in your desk chair. “I also wanted to come see how you were doing. We were told to leave you alone, but I can’t stop thinking about the train wreck that was yesterday and was worried about you. Some of the other guys are worried too.”
You smiled wide at him, “Well I appreciate your worry, but I’m honestly fine. Actually, better than ever really.”
“Really?” Hobi said excitedly, sitting taller in the chair.
“Really. I was actually going to call your leader when I woke up today accepting the role of 'companion' for yall.” You said sweetly to him. Starting to move to get out of your bed.
“Really?” He said again but this time confused, looking at you like you grew another head. “Are you sure about that? Not that I’m not happy to hear that. But, you seemed very upset yesterday. You don’t have any follow up questions or anything?” He said standing from the chair, meeting you in the middle of the bed room.
“Oh that.” You said dismissively waving your hand in the air. “It was just the initial shock, I promise I’m fine with it and I know you all will take care of me. Right?” You looked up at him still with a smile on your face. He tried to look for any moment or bit of doubt on your face, but found none.
He was definitely confused but relieved you were not only feeling a whole lot better, but also agreeing to them. Not that you had much of a choice, but this was a much easier process for them if you cooperated willingly. “Okay cool. Well then I’ll tell Joon and I’m sure he will want to talk some more about logistics that we weren’t able to get to yesterday.” He turned walking towards the door. “I’ll leave you to your breakfast.” As he walked to the door he turned, gave you a smile, closing the door and locking it behind him. Making sure to check the handle before leaving.
Hobi walked into Joon’s office directly after seeing you, seeing their leader already up and at his desk early this morning like he normally was, “Did we do a psych eval on her before we did all of this?” Hobi said, falling into one of the plush chairs in front of the large desk.
Without looking up from his computer monitor that he was glaring at very intently, “Yeah Yoongi ran her medical history, no notes or mention of any mental illness for her, or immediate family. Why?”
“I just came from her room.” At that, Joon looked away from his monitor and turned to his brother, “I told you to stay away from her. She needs time.”
Hobi scrunched half his face up and said, “Technically you said to leave her alone just yesterday, but didn’t say anything about today.”
Joon rolled his eyes and took a deep sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Okay fine. But yes she was cleared. What happened?”
“She woke up smiling and told me she was going to agree to being here. She didn’t have any questions or concerns. Just said she knew we would take care of her. It just seems like an odd switch when she was ready to rip our heads off yesterday.”
Joon was shocked to hear this, but also relieved. Like Hobi, he knew this would make yours and their lives much easier. But he was also suspicious for the same reasons. He knew that going about this the way they did was going to be hard on you and he expected more push back. Maybe this was all too much and you were having a mental break.
He had been in this world of organized crime for more years than not in his life. He knew when something was not right and was going to get to the bottom of it. “Huh, yeah that is strange.” Joon said leaning back in his chair, eyes darting around the ceiling as he was lost in thought. “Let me talk with her and I’ll fill you in later.”
Hobi started to stand from his chair, “You sure you don’t want me here, in case it goes sideways again?”
Joon glared at him. “Yeah I think I can handle her. Stay here though, I’m going to need you.” He picked up his phone, dialing your room. It rang a few times before he heard your voice on the other end. “Hello?”
“Yn, it’s Namjoon. I wondered if we could talk about yesterday if you’re up for it?”
“Funny you called, I was just about to call you asking the same thing.” You said, sounding a lot more casual and upbeat than Joon anticipated for today. So Hobi wasn’t lying and was right in his concern.
“Um yeah I’ll have someone bring you to my office shortly.”
“Sounds good. See you soon.” You said cheerfully and hung up the phone.
He looked at Hobi now leaning one hip on the desk, scrolling through his phone. Joon said, “Can you go get her and bring her here. And you were right she sounds almost chipper?”
“Yeah it’s weird right? I guess I’ll be right back.”
Hanging up the phone with Joon you could finally relax your face and drop the fake smile you had donned to sound sweet with Joon. You had many years of practice of fake smiles and friendly voices with your years in customer service. You could switch in and out of your customer service mode in seconds without even thinking about it. So you knew going back and forth and having that mask on around the members of Bangtan would not be hard for you.
You were getting nervous because the things you called Matthew about yesterday still hadn’t arrived and you would be needing them sooner rather than later.
You had just stepped out of the closet after changing out of your pajamas and into a simple pair of jeans, a long sleeve t-shirt, and your favorite zip hoodie, when you heard a knock at your door. Opening it you saw Hobi once again in your doorway. “Thank you for actually knocking this time.” You said jokingly to him as you stepped into the hall. “I assume you’re my escort to the boss's office?”
“Yeah I just can’t seem to stay away from you.” He said, grinning at you and offering his elbow for you to link your arms together as you walked.
You hesitated at first, but took his arm by the inside elbow and started down the hall. You two walked in silence together until Hobi asked, “So what music do you like to listen to?”
“What?” You said, the question catching you off guard. These men knew everything, including your blood type, but didn’t know your music taste?
“Music? I assume you listen to it. What have you been listening to?” He said with a slight laugh.
“Oh, um, I listen to a lot of different things really. I’ve been really into kpop recently though.”
Hobi turned his upper body towards you, still walking you two through the never ending maze of hallways. “Oh for real? I have a friend from my childhood that’s an idol actually. You might have heard of him, Jackson Wang.”
Your feet came to a complete halt, making him trip a little, not expecting the sudden stop. “Shut the fuck up! You know THE Jackson Wang?” You gasped at him.
Hobi caught his balance and turned to you, “Yeah we talk every once in a while. He is always so busy that I really only see him at his parties.” You stared at him in shock, processing the fact that Hobi just told you that he’s been to Jackson Wang parties. “Would you be interested in going with me sometime? I think you would really like them.”
Him looking at you waiting for a response made you realize you were not saying anything to him. You cleared your throat snapping back to normal, “Oh yeah that sounds great. I would love to go.” You smiled at him as you both turned to continue walking.
The two of you fell into comfortable silence again as you walked, coming to Joon’s office door not long after. Hobi scanned his finger print on the keypad on the door handle, telling you “Well this is your stop. I didn’t say it before but I really am happy you’re here and that you’re giving this all a chance. Good luck in there.” The door beeped quietly, signalling it was unlocked for you, Hobi opened the large door, placing a hand on the small of your back, guiding you inside.
The room was brightly lit from the morning sun casting rays of yellow and orange across the floor and the bookshelves lining the walls. You walked in to see Joon already sitting on one of the couches in the middle of the room that faced each other. He was leaning back, leg crossed against the other, the morning sun catching in his hair making him look like he was glowing. He was scrolling through his phone when he heard the door open and you step in. “Yn! Come on in, have a seat with me.” He nodded to the opposite couch.
He continued as you sat on the couch facing him, “I was a little shocked this morning to hear that you are already on board with being a companion to me and my brothers.”
“Hobi couldn’t wait to tell you, I guess. But yeah he’s right. I had time to think about it last night and I actually really think it could be fun. I’ve met all the others and we seemed to get along well, so I’m excited to get to know you all better.” You said trying to sound as genuine as possible.
Namjoon leaned forward, putting his elbows on his knees as he looked at you through his lashes. “Cut the shit, Yn.”
You stared at him for a millisecond scared that your sweetness mask was slipping. “I don’t know what you mean. I’m telling you the truth.”
“Uh huh, sure you are. So it’s totally normal for you to go from a full panic attack after being told you are staying here with us, and that your boyfriend is dead by his own hands, to now chipper with a smile that could give the sun a run for its money with how bright it is?”
“Like I said, I just needed the time to process everything after the initial shock. And Trevor isn’t my boyfriend, we broke up months ago. But yes, I got to thinking, I wouldn’t have to worry about anything anymore, right? No more bills, no more work, no more drafty apartment. Here I just have to keep you all company and you do everything for me. Sounds like a dream to me.” You said leaning back, feeling confident you were convincing him of your lies.
He dropped his head and shook it from side to side a little, chuckling darkly to himself. “Okay we can play it your way then.” He said as he stood up and walked behind his desk, picking up 3 full plastic shopping bags, and bringing them back to the table that was between the two couches. “Then what is all of this that you asked our staff to get you?”
Your stomach dropped looking at the bags, knowing what was inside them. “Just some things I needed to be more comfortable here.” You said as you prayed he didn’t know what the mixture of these items could do.
He sat back down on the edge of the couch and started pulling out the items one by one and grouping certain ones together until everything was laid out in the exact combinations you had planned.
On the far left was a bottle of eye drop liquid, a couple bottles of iced tea, honey, and a set of glass cups. Next to it, a cinnamon candle, lighter, and isopropyl alcohol. Another group had a bottle of over the counter sleep medication, and a package of snack cakes. And the final group mascara, tampons, a new toothbrush and a face mask. An assortment of items that to anyone else would look like a trip to the store to restock on items for around the house.
He leaned back against the couch again, legs wide as he rested his arm against the arm of the couch and stared at you intently. “Sweetheart, I’ve been in this world for far too long to not know when someone is lying to me. That’s what got your boyfriend in trouble. I’m only going to ask this once so that we can do this the easy way, okay? Are you sure you weren’t planning on poisoning, drugging and lighting one of my guys on fire with this stuff?”
Staring at everything on the table in shock, you weren’t able to look at the man. You knew you were caught. And what could you say really? The only knowledge about hurting anyone that you had came from the true crime shows you used to watch with your mom growing up. You thought mixing it up even more with the last group of items would throw them off for sure, or to where you at least had them before anyone put the pieces together.
You lifted your eyes to him, but kept your head low. His jaw was tight, obviously trying to keep his anger at bay with you. “Yeah okay fine. You’re right. Can you blame me though? You keep saying I’m not a prisoner here, and say that I can’t go anywhere and my whole life is gone. You expect me to just surrender myself to your whim and just go along blindly? Just sit in that room patiently until I’m of use to someone? If you truly thought I would be that easy, you didn’t do enough research on me.” You finished leaning back against your couch now, crossing your arms across your chest.
Joon dropped his eyes to the table in front of him and back at you. “I didn’t expect you to, no.” He said as you could see some of the anger left him as he took in your words. “I had more to go over with you but then JK went and opened his mouth. You are to stay here and we would have to escort you between places, that is true, but it wouldn’t be forever.” He leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees again.
“This place is not just our house, it’s called headquarters for a reason. You and everyone here is protected while on the grounds, but there are places inside our walls that would not be safe for you if you just stumbled across them.”
“Such as?” You said curious now that it seems like tensions had eased and you were getting information from the leader in front of you.
He chuckled lowly again, “I’m not sure you’re ready for that information yet, or ever really. Like I said on your first day here, we do bad things to protect the people in our territory from the other bad guys out there.”
“Well for starters, there's Jin’s lab where they make and test the latest and greatest drugs.”
“Easy, what else.” You said growing in confidence.
He chuckled again, standing up to pace up and down the room as he spoke and you kept your eyes on him. “Then there's the armory where we keep our weapons when we’re not using them, but also where Jimin and his team build and make new weapons and gear for us.”
You just nodded your head telling him to go on.
“Can’t forget Yooni’s data center. A lot of important information and secrets in there. And he would be beyond mad if something happened to anything in there.” You looked at him with a look of boredom as he continued.
“Or there's the black box.” he said as he stopped, gripping the back of the couch he had been sitting on.
“What’s the black box?” You asked as you leaned forward with curiosity.
A cocky half smile grew on his face, “Its where we torture and sometimes kill people for one reason or another.” He said it so casually that it took your brain a second to process the words. Your face dropped and all the color drained from it.
You swallowed hard, trying to get the sudden frog in your throat to go down. “ Y’all do that here, in the house.”
“I mean it’s down in the basement next to the holding cells, but yeah. All of our equipment and our teams are here so it just makes it easier.” He said still cool as a cucumber, standing up straight and crossing his arms across his wide chest.
“Yeah, no that makes sense for you guys.” You said as you looked down at the assortment of items you thought you were really going to use on these men to get your freedom. And even if some wild universe that Joon hadn’t figured you out, you kept forgetting you have a tracker in your back now. Even if you were able to pull something off, they would find you and they would not be in a good mood when they did.
Joon came back around towards you, sliding everything on the table to the side so he could sit on it in front of you. “I know you got here in a less than … ideal situation, but I really think you will come to like it here with us.” He said as he placed a hand on your arm, this time not flinching away from him, which he took as a good sign.
“Okay yeah it’s still a lot,” You said staring at where his hand held your arm, Joon nodded in agreement, “And I’m still mad about this.” He nodded again, willing you to continue. “But I guess I have no choice but to just figure this out as we go. I do have one request first though.” You said looking at Joon.
“Name it.” He said staring back at you so intently you had to look at the table he was sitting on, “Can I keep some of these things? I actually could use them. Not everything of course.” You said with a chuckle. Seeing Joon smile at you, dropping and shaking his head, “Yeah I think I can accommodate that.”
