Honestly, I'm not sure how this one turned out. I did a few quality checks, and while there are some little details I could probably edit and tracks I could re-record, I think I did what I could. I just hope I did Gunbuster, an anime I enjoyed, some kind of justice, and sparked some interest in those of you who've ever seen it, but it's definitely an imperfect video with a couple of pretty noticeable mistakes (see if you can spot them!).

The pre-opening scene and post-credit scene were kind of fun to do (even though one of the mistakes was in the opening bit), with the latter being a lot of venting I wanted to do about the current political environment in the US. That's all I'll say about that (for now).

Ah, Kunihiko Ikuhara. I enjoyed Utena, to a point, but I love Penguindrum. To me, Penguindrum really fulfills the promise of Utena, giving us a similarly psychological experience with themes about society, but with more complex characters and overlapping arcs than Utena had. Sure, the Ikuhara anime that's more like Utena is actually Yurikuma Arashi, but I never even finished that one (I watched the first six episodes and got what they were trying to say, so I didn't feel the need to finish it)! Maybe one of these days I'll revisit that one, and Sarazanmai. I will say that Utena does have a better antagonist than Penguindrum (Sanetoshi is a little dull), but Penguindrum has... penguins! I'm really starting to run out of certified favorites to cover. I need to get back to reviewing crap! Eh, eventually. I've got another solid favorite for my next video, too, but that's not until June. I'm taking some time off until then. It's time once again for another Mid Year English Dub Review, where I take a look at all the English dubs I've covered thus far in the year. The first half (lol, it's July) of the year saw me review anime with dubs by Animaze, Industrial Smoke & Mirrors, Funimation, Ocean, and others. I think we got a good sampling of different dub studios this time around, with even some "also ran" studios like Swirl Recording.

And, of course, I spent a chunk of this video talking about the differences between the two English versions of Neon Genesis Evangelion and how I actually prefer the VSI Group/Netflix dub. There's more nuance in the newer dub, IMO.

So, yeah, this is a pretty short one, isn't it? Well, some of it is my usual laziness, but mostly, it's because I want the viewer to actually watch this one with some freshness (even though I basically show the ending, lol). Missed by a Dollar is a particularly good Lupin III TV special, one of my favorites, in fact. It has all the hallmarks of a good Lupin joint: a compelling main narrative, some good heisting, and Lupin just utterly demoralizing somebody into defeat. I mean, wow, he just wrecks this lady. It's a work of art, what he does.

Otaku Evolution Episode 150 - Pokémon: The First Movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back)

I had this one in the works for a while. In fact, I had the scaled-down Pokémon version of my Penguinopolis bedroom done years ago, just in case I ever covered something from the franchise. I didn't do anything as fancy as, say, do customized battle screens or anything, but let's put that on a back burner, should I ever return to Pokémon in the future. For now, enjoy my 150th (!!!) video, on Mewtwo Strikes Back!

Otaku Evolution Episode 131 - Ronin Warriors (Part 1)

In this first outing of the year, part one of two, takes a look at the first anime I was ever a conscious fan of, Ronin Warriors (or Samurai Troopers in Japanese). Its characters are kind of thinly written, but it has a simple charm to it that makes me remember it fondly. It's sort of like a less celebrated Saint Seiya. It was smart for American licensors to pick it up, because it was just the right fit for animated programming back in the day.
