An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
The beginning of something new.
Chapter seven of It Takes One To Know Me is up. And it only took six months this time! Which is better than the year it took me last time. Things are only going to get more intense for Jackal and Boone.
Thank you to @comrade-shrimp for beta’ing and motivating me!!

A promise is kept.
It’s here!! Chapter six of It Takes One To Know Me is finally here!! And it only took me *checks calendar* …over a year! Woof. Well, here it is for anyone who’s still interested or anyone who’s new here and wants to read about Jackal and Boone. They’re finally interacting and I’m having a really fun time writing them again. Missed these idiots :’)

Jackal and Boone Pre Relationship!
ah... the pining idiots... i already answered 2 and 4 here so here’s the rest!
PRE-RELATIONSHIP
1. How did they first meet?
The standard meeting in Novac, though the first instance of them speaking to each other occurs in the early morning when Jackal is being chased by legionaries and Boone covers her from his post in the dinosaur (I wrote this scene in ITOTKM). They don’t have a real conversation until the middle of the night, when Jackal wanders up to Boone’s post in search of a distraction.
3. Did any of their friends or family want them to get together?
Veronica silently roots for them to get together as soon as she realizes that there’s some unaddressed feelings between them. Cass teases both of them about it simply because she thinks it’s entertaining to watch them deny it. Arcade is a bit more wary, especially when he sees how much Boone’s influence can depress Jackal at times (being in love with someone with a death wish tends to bring you down). He and Boone don’t have a great relationship for a while because Arcade tells him to stop playing with Jackal’s heart and just make a damn decision.
Of course, Boone is stubborn and barely listens.
5. Did either of them try to resist their feelings?
Oh, big time. Both of them are in denial for a while — even when they do accept it, Boone is convinced that openly having feelings for Jackal is inviting fate to punish him (or, more specifically, her) just like it did with Carla. Meanwhile, Jackal knows that Boone is still mourning his wife and that even if he did love her back, he wouldn’t show it because of said conviction. She also doesn’t want to ruin the friendship they have.
So they keep their feelings to themselves, occasionally losing their self-control due to stressful circumstances.
6. If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think?
Jackal would probably laugh and brush it off at first, but… it would make sense to her. Though it takes a while for them to build the trust, she’s never met someone who, in her words, she could talk to without saying anything. Being around him makes her feel stronger.
Boone would have mixed feelings. The idea of a singular soulmate would somewhat confirm his belief that his relationship with Carla was doomed from the start, which definitely wouldn’t make him feel good, though he can also recognize that the bond he shares with Jackal is different. He shares things with her that he’s never felt comfortable discussing with anyone else before.

44. “Is that my shirt?”
Sunlight streamed through the windows of the Lucky 38’s lounge, glinting off of Boone’s sunglasses as he drank his coffee. In a rare turn of events, he was awake before Jackal — she usually rose with the sun. When she finally stepped out of the elevator, half-dressed with a tired, irritable look on her face, he immediately knew the reason she’d slept in. She was hungover.
“Good morning.” He couldn’t help the amused look on his face — it was frustrating how high-energy she could be in the mornings, so it was nice to see her walking around like a zombie for once.
Jackal dragged a hand over her face and attempted to rub the sleep from her eyes. “Says you,” she grumbled, walking over to him.
“There’s some coffee left if you want it.” He nodded at the coffee machine.
That pulled a smile out of her, and she patted his shoulder before moving behind the counter to pour herself a cup. “Oh Boone, have I ever told you that you’re my favorite friend?”
“That so?” he replied dryly. She proceeded to, in his opinion, ruin her cup of coffee by adding way too much cream and sugar. He winced involuntarily.
Jackal hummed in response, leaning against the counter and taking a sip with a relieved sigh. “Yep. Don’t tell the others though, they might get jealous.”
“Uh-huh. How are your stitches?” he asked, the humor in his voice fading into concern.
She lifted up her shirt to reveal a row of stitches above her hip. The wound itself wasn’t deep, but it was long — a result of a Legion machete. “It’s healing fine. No infection. Would go a bit faster if I used more stimpacks, but I figured we could both use the day off,” she smirked.
“Guess so. We—” Boone stopped and frowned. “Wait. Is that my shirt?”
Jackal looked down at her chest as if she’d never seen a white t-shirt before. “What? This is mine.”
He wasn’t convinced. “It’s too big for you.”
She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, which nearly covered the shorts she was wearing. “Bigger shirts are more comfortable to sleep in,” she shrugged.
“And that’s why you took mine?”
“This is my shirt, alright?” Jackal scowled, putting a hand on her hip. “Even if it wasn’t — which it is — our clothes get mixed up all the time when we do laundry. Ain’t my fault if your stuff falls my way.”
“Which it definitely didn’t.”
“Right,” she nodded.
“Even though I tore a hole in my shirt in that same spot when I got caught on that Joshua tree last week,” Boone said flatly, pointing at the sleeve.
Jackal followed his finger and snorted once she saw the hole. “Heh, I forgot about that.” He raised an eyebrow, and she hurriedly cleared her throat upon realizing that her reaction was potentially incriminating. “Must’ve torn it in the same place. Weird,” she shrugged innocently.
Boone pinched the bridge of his nose. “Jack, you can’t wear my shirts. The others are gonna think—”
When he didn’t finish his sentence, she looked at him expectantly. “Gonna think what?” She took another sip of her coffee.
Jackal was still half-asleep, and that was probably all that prevented her from understanding what he was trying to say. They’re going to think we’re sleeping together. Maybe it didn’t matter, because Cass was already convinced, but he was trying to avoid adding fuel to the fire. “Just— stop taking my clothes.”
“It’s not yours!” she cried, throwing a hand up. “Why does it matter anyways?” A smug grin suddenly spread across her face. “What, you want me to take it off?”
“Y— no. No.” Boone sighed. Apparently being hungover wasn’t enough to stop her from making suggestive jokes. “Forget it. You win.”
“Because it’s my shirt,” Jackal laughed.
He just shook his head and returned to his cup of coffee. “It is now.”
