AN: okay sorry this is sorta late because i first had to watch last thursdays ep & then had to come up with an idea. Oh I actually dont really even know what this is & I kinda forgot about the whole angel of death thing even though I kinda threw it in at the beginning. Sorry if this isn’t what you wanted!

[au. set in 5x17 when Caroline & Tom are at the diner.]

"Perky blonde angel of death…" she’d heard Enzo call her. Sure, she got the perky and blonde part, but angel of death? what did that even mean?

She had no time to think it through before they had to go and find Tom Avery. And after they found him, Caroline brought him back to the diner.

Caroline saw him chocking on his meal, struggling for air. She saw herself bring the water out of his reach. Maybe she could do it. Maybe she could let him die, save Stefan, and this could be over. 

But she felt her stomach clench up. She thought of this poor guy lying dead on the table, and she could’ve done something to save him, and didn’t, and it quickened her pace.

Before she could blink to see her hallucination come true, a voice, actually a voice she never thought she’d ever hear again, approached them.

"Caroline, love?"

No. This could not be happening. Not here.

"Well, isn’t it a small world?" The signature smirk appeared on the one accented Brit she actually didn’t hate, despite what she said.

Still she looked up, some how hoping it wouldn’t be him and she didn’t have to deal with this right now, but just her luck, it was him. “Klaus,” she breathed out, shocked to see him.

"Who’s this?" Tom Avery asked, looking between the two, but was overlapped by Caroline.

"What are you doing here?" she shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts.

"Just had a problem in New Orleans, and had to find a witch up here. What brings you and Stefan," he gestured to the confused doppelganger who stopped eating, "so far from home?"

Caroline opened her mouth, “It’s a, um, really long story…” she trailed off, looking over at Tom Avery.

"Wait, who’s Stefan?" He asked, every inch of his face showed his confusion, "and who is this?”

And before Klaus could ask Caroline what was going on, Caroline looked the Stefan doppelganger in the eyes, “Stay here. Ill be right back.” She compelled him, before getting out of her booth, taking Klaus’ hand and dragging him outside into the parking garage.

"How’d you do that, love? Compel Stefan? And how does he not remember who I am?"

Caroline shook her head as they got outside, quickly releasing his hand, realizing she made a mistake. “What are you doing here?” she demanded, “You promised.”

"Actually, I promised to stay out of Mystic Falls. This right here, is fate." He smirked.

"It’s not Stefan." She said blatantly, avoiding his comment about fate, "it’s his doppelganger."

Klaus just gave her a confused look, “I guess I did miss a lot in Mystic Falls, here I thought only Petrova’s were selfish enough to have clones of themselves.”

"Well, you were wrong." Caroline replied sassily, "Salvatore’s apparently are, too. Although it’s not Damon, just Stefan." she huffed when he gave her the same look Tom did, begging for her to explain. "Like I said, super long story you probably don’t even care about." 

"Alright, well if you don’t want to tell me, than why are you still here?" Klaus questioned. Honestly he didn’t even care about the story, but he cared about Caroline, and her worries.

"Because I don’t want to go back inside," She pouted a bit before kicking the ground with her shoe, like a child.

"Why not, love?"

"Because," Caroline took a shaky breath, "I have to kill him." She whispered, and if it wasn’t for Klaus’ vampire senses, he wouldn’t of heard her. He actually didn’t even know if he heard her right. This was Caroline. Beautiful, strong, innocent Caroline. And now she was going around killing people? What had he missed when he left?

"Why do you have to kill him?" He said after he got over the initial shock of Caroline killing anyone. He’d only ever seen her kill once, and it was in Bonnie’s name, to save her life. 

"It’s a long story," she repeated, but he could see her trying not to let tears slip from her eyes. 

"Caroline, love, you can tell me. Please tell me before I assume that you’ve become a mass murderer since I’ve left." He added, mostly for himself, but saw Caroline scoff at the comment.

"No," she shook her head in disgust, "I’d never become another Damon. I have to kill him to save Stefan." She said in short, well the shortest way she could without explaining the Travelers, and doppelgangers, and Silas and Amara, and all the stuff she was sure he didn’t care about.

Klaus nodded. At least now it made sense. Stefan was in some sort of trouble, and obviously killing this guy would save him. And as much as Caroline wanted to save Stefan, that didn’t mean it’d be easy for her to kill this guy. 

"And I don’t want to kill him." She finished. "I’m a good vampire, and I don’t just go around killing people. I mean, that’s not right." She said more to herself than to Klaus, but she lifted her eyes enough to see Klaus duck his head in shame. She’d almost forgotten he was a bad person until he met her.

"Then don’t kill him." Klaus told her honestly.

"And what I am suppose to do? Just let Stefan get his brain fried out?" She demanded, not really to him, not really to anyone.

"Then kill him." He suggested again, stepping back slightly when Caroline looked up at him with wide eyes filled with horror.

“No! I can’t do that. I can’t kill this poor innocent guy.” She convinced herself.

"Not even to save Stefan?" He asked, causing her to look up at him with raised eyebrows.

"Okay, who’s side are you even on?" She demanded, narrowing her eyes.

"Yours, always." he smirked. "Which is why I think you shouldn’t kill him. It’s not who you are, Caroline." He said, looking her dead in the eyes to let her know he was serious, and making Caroline feel a bit better before she heard the parking garage door open, revealing a limp Tom Avery and Enzo.

"What did you do?" She demanded, speeding over to the Tom Avery that Enzo had throw on the ground, checking his pulse. Dead.

"What you couldn’t," he said obviously, not noticing Klaus until he looked up a moment after Caroline spoke.

"You didn’t have to kill him!" 

"Yes, I did!" Enzo huffed, now looking up at Klaus, "Who’s this?" He demanded at her.

Before Caroline could say anything but “a friend-” she was interrupted.

"Klaus Mikaelson." He introduced himself, causing Enzo to lift an eyebrow at Caroline. "And who are you, mate?" Klaus asked, looking between Caroline and Enzo suspiciously.

"Enzo." Enzo introduced himself curtly.

"Well, I’d love to stay and chat," Caroline said after a few moments, "but I kind of have to be hitting the road since our work here," she said glaring at Enzo and Tom’s dead body, "is now done."

"If you insist Goldilocks," Enzo commented, clearly waiting her out before she bit her lip.

"Can you give us a second, Enzo?" She asked only after the moments Enzo stood there, waiting for her after it was apparent she wasn’t moving.

"If the lady insists. I’ll take care of the body." He pulled the lifeless body out of the garage, while Caroline looked away the best she could.

"He seems pleasant," Klaus commented after Enzo was out of ear shot.

Caroline chuckled, “you should try having to deal with him in a car ride from Mystic Falls.” 

Klaus chuckled before clearing his throat, “So, were you and Enzo…?” He trailed off of his question, causing Caroline to grimace.

"Ugh, no. Of course not." She shook her head, "He’s almost as bad as being in a relationship with Damon." Klaus chuckled as she did. "Why?" She asked after a moment, "Are you jealous?" She quirked an eyebrow.

Klaus just chuckled, ducking his head a bit, and not replying.

"Soo…" she dragged out the ‘o’. "Do you have any girls in New Orleans, taking my place?""None that matter." He replied immediately.

"Good," Caroline said, a hint of a smirk on her lips. They were quiet for a few moments, before Caroline clasped her hands together "I guess I should go then," She bit her lip, slowly walking off.

"Caroline," he called out after her, "I’m sorry about…"

"Tom." Caroline finished, "his name was Tom."

 ”I’m sorry about Tom.” He said sincerely.

"It’s okay," She nodded, walking off a bit more.

"Caroline," he called out again, causing her to laugh lightly as she turned around,

"Yes?" 

"No one could ever replace you, love." he said seriously again. causing Caroline to get that look on her face that she got when Klaus said something she didn’t know how to reply to.

She wanted to say no one could replace him, she might have even gone far enough to say she wanted to go to New Orleans with him, but not knowing how to put that into words, she just smiled at him genuinely. “Keep in touch,” she added with her hand on the door, “I mean, I know you promised you wouldn’t, but I kinda changed my mind. And I mean I know it’ll be hard since they didn’t have cell phones in your day, but they exist now, which means now you have no excuse for not calling and leaving me romantic voicemails that I’ll pretend I didn’t hear when Bonnie and Elena ask me about them.” She finished, turning her back, leaving him smirking behind her, and going back home where she could already hear the teasing of Enzo and Damon.

AN: also to add, I don’t watch TO so I have no logical reason for Klaus being in Atlanta. and I know that Klaus is hooking up with some witch in NOLA, but in this story (canon) she doesn’t matter :)

I haven't even read that yet but I have a basic idea of the story. I'm not sure there's a story similar though, I'm afraid. It might be one of a kind.

I prefer time by myself. But I do love hanging with my friends, but I absolutely need my time in between to recharge before I see more people.
