Latest release: York St (album out Friday, June 24)
Upcoming shows: Album Release Party | Rainbow Bistro | Friday, June 24 | 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM Ottawa Jazz Festival | Rideau Centre | Saturday, July 2 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Ottawa Bluesfest | Claridge Stage | Sunday, July 17 | 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM Blacksheep Inn | Sunday, August 28 | 4:20 PM
SA: Since we last spoke, leMeow has been very busy! Can you give us a brief update on the band's activities over the past year? GB: Since we last spoke, we’ve scored two more FACTOR recording grants, finished our debut album York St, launched our monthly YouTube music video campaign, made the regionals in the CBC Music Searchlight competition and released one new official music video for our single I Got You which we filmed in Hawaii. We’ve been working hard!
SA: You guys are set to rock an album release party for York St. this Friday, June 24 at the Rainbow Bistro. What can fans expect from this celebratory performance? GB: We’re really excited about Friday because it’ll be our first time performing our new songs as a full band. In addition to our usual four-piece ensemble, we’ll be joined by our friend Zeke who plays a mean tenor sax. So fans can look forward to hearing our new jams plus lots of wicked sax solos!
SA: Ottawa Jazz Festival on July 2. Ottawa Bluesfest on July 17. This is a big summer of festivals for you guys! What excites you the most about playing these high-profile festivals? GB: I think the most exciting thing about playing these festivals is that it gives us a chance to recruit new fans. Both festivals have a huge draw so hopefully we can turn a few heads!
SA: Keeping it light, if you could share a meal with any three musicians, dead or alive, who would you choose and why? GB: 1) Paul McCartney...because The Beatles. 2) Nina Simone - I think she was a musical genius with a style all her own. We wouldn’t even have to talk. I’d just like to be in her presence. 3) Fats Domino - I love that New Orleans R&B! I don’t know much about his personal life but his music makes me think we’d get along.
SA: One last question: personally, what is your favourite song off of your new record, and why? GB: I guess I’d pick the title track, York St. Musically, that song has so many different layers. I think I just like the way they all fit together. Lyrically, it’s a good reminder of all the shenanigans we used to get up to when we lived in the ByWard Market.
Great show from Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, featuring Edie Brickell at the #OttawaJazzFest They killed it!
