Market Position & Competitors and Threats
American Broadcast Company is one of the 'Big Three televisions networks' in the US which also includes CBS and NBC. These three networks dominated American TV for a long time, there were attempts from other companies to enter television medium but all of these attempts only lasted for brief periods. A fourth television network came into competition when Fox was founded in 1986. Since being founded Fox has surpassed ABC and NBC in the ratings during prime time television, becoming the second most watched network behind CBS.
Another competitor to ABC is PBS, which has existed since 1970, is also another one of the main television networks. PBS is different to all of the other networks as it is a noncommercial service and has a different distribution model compared to most other major networks in the US.
Today the "Big Three" only control a relatively small portion of the market. With broadcast competitors such as Fox, The CW, MyNetworkTV, and national cable and satellite channels such as TNT, ESPN and AMC, the Big Three's market share has got a lot smaller.
