cause i went into seeing this production of pippin not knowing the show at all and thinking. oh the character playing pippin IS pippin and the players are telling the story of pippin joining their troupe. and that’ll be his corner of the sky. he’ll find belonging in art and performance. and the players telling his story are his future family. but no….no….the player of pippin is in the position of his character..he feels lost and unfulfilled but here he is, finding belonging in art and performance, telling a story of someone who feels the same as he did. the player thinks, as his character pippin thinks, he’ll find that thing that will match up to his extraordinary dreams, but all that’s waiting for him is a fiery death, to give his life up for art, one final, perfect act. and the players have done this before but each pippin plays the role only once. there has to be something else, right? there has to be a corner of the sky out there for him? and he gets out. the performance falls apart, he’s free, now that he’s tied to something. but here is a young boy. and he sees the magic and beauty and thinks he could be something extraordinary. and it begins again.
