Juniper and one of the older men had been put on DEAD DUTY, meaning they were in charge of taking care of the dead at the front of the fence. The weight of dead bodies slamming themselves against it was causing some wear and tear on the fencing, and it was only a matter of time and determination from those hungry beasts before the fence collapsed completely. That area would become rundown with the dead, preventing a way in or out on the southeast corner of the building. She was hard at work stabbing her twentieth-something biter through the head when she and her partner heard gunshots from within the building. They locked eyes, a quiet uncertainty about going back inside. They were hardly armed, especially against gunfire. They didn't even know if Slade's people were taking out their own captives people, or something else entirely.
Whether they wanted to go back in or not wasn't up to them. Someone on the other side of the door would have to let them back in, so for now, they were trapped, wedges between a locked door and a fence, with the dead bouncing their gutted bodies against it, trying to get to the only two warm bodies they could find. After a few agonizing minutes waiting to see what fate awaited them, and the sound of bullets pelting on the other side of the door, the door itself finally unlocked and swung open. A gun was in their face, causing both Juniper and her partner to drop their pathetic weapons and hold their hands up innocently, the only defense they had. Juniper hardly looked the man with the gun in the eye, only doing so long enough to note that he wasn't one of Slade's men.
'Move,' they were ordered rather aggressively, and the two hurried inside the walls of the fallen rehabilitation center. Juniper could see bodies on the floor, but was unable to tell if they were Slade's men or the innocent people he forced to stay here. Before she could make out too much in all the chaos, a hand grasped her shoulder and forced her to her knees. Someone new put a gun in her face, forcing her to sputter, ❝ We're not with him! We're not his people! ❞ She prayed to whoever was listening that he would take a leap of faith instead of pulling the trigger on her.
