↳ A CLOSER LOOK:
Annabelle Joyce Hudson was an angel from the moment she was born. Annie, as she preferred to be called, was always known as the most well behaved child. She rarely ever cried as a baby, she always did what she was told as a toddler, and her rebellious stage in high school was over before it got too serious. She didn’t want to be known as a bad kid. Growing up with a single mom meant she heard a lot about how wrong it was. How she was screwing up her kid’s life, or how she should be ashamed of herself. Even a young Annie knew that these people were wrong, and that she was just as lucky as healthy as any other kid. Sure, she wondered why the other kids had two parents and she only had her mom, but she was happy with her. Still, for some reason, she felt like she had something to prove. Instead of getting angry at those people, she was kind to them. When she could have been starting fights, she let most things roll right off her back. It wasn’t easy, and there were times when she almost snapped, but she was able to hold it in for the most part. It got to the point where she was known as a pushover. That’s not something she enjoyed being called, and if anyone asked her, she would say she was only being friendly. Her mom tried to tell her that it was okay to stand up for herself, but she didn’t want to listen. She liked being nice and making people happy. She didn’t understand why that was a problem. When she got older, she started to see what her parents had been talking about.
High school had been hell for Annie. It was like that for most people, but when you’re known as a pushover, people will take advantage of you. Her “friends” knew just what to say to get her to do things for them. She would cover for them when they skipped school, she would lie to their parents about where they were (which she hated doing- Annie wasn’t a liar, but it was for her friends), and she would even do their homework for them, which they used to call tutoring, but they stopped going altogether and left her to do it on her own. All of that changed one night when her so called friends threw a party, lying to their parents about spending the night with Annie. She thought she would be sitting by the phone, answering it when their parents called to confirm their stories. She had done it before, just to make sure her mom didn’t answer it before she did. That would have been really bad. Only this time, they invited her to go. Annie wasn’t much of a party girl, but she accepted for a chance to be around her friends. The party was exactly how she expected, with alcohol and boys practically thrown at her. She wasn’t at all interested in either, though she did drink just to fit in with everyone else. The night was fun for the most part, since it was the first time she felt like an actual teenager. Until one of the girls decided she wanted to drive home drunk. There were a lot of things Annie would cover for, but that was not one of them. She’d never be able to live with herself if the girl got hurt, or if she hurt someone else.
Calling the police was the last thing she wanted to do, but after begging her drunken friend not to go, that’s the only option she had left. She had tried calling her parents, but they didn’t pick up the phone. The cops showed up there and broke up the party. Although that wasn’t what she wanted, she did what she had to do. Lucky for her, she was mostly sober when they got there, so they hadn’t suspected she had been drinking. Especially since she was the one to call them. Others weren’t so lucky. Quite a few people had been arrested that night and she knew it was her fault. Having no way to get home, she called one of her real friends and asked them for a ride. She was terrified when she got there, not wanting to tell her mom where she had really been that night. She couldn’t keep it from her, though. She was tired of lying to her. As hard as it was, Annie went inside and told her everything. The crying made it hard to get the words out, but it also showed her mom how sorry she really was. She must have believed her, because even though she was disappointed, she spent the night telling her she did the right thing. Her classmates didn’t think so, since she went from “pushover” to “nark” in only a day, but she didn’t care. She wasn’t going to be taken advantage of anymore
Her senior year in high school would end up being her only good year. She stopped hanging out with the wrong people, and instead started surrounding herself with only the best. She was still that same friendly girl she had always been, she just learned that it was okay to say no sometimes. And she did. All the time. When graduation came around, she was much more confident than when she first started high school. Her grades had always been excellent, which meant she could do whatever she wanted, but all she really wanted to do was cook. Ever since she was a kid, when she got an easy bake oven for her sixth birthday, she loved cooking and baking for people. It was another way to make people happy and it made her feel good about herself. She didn’t travel far for school, instead taking classes at a culinary school in Bentoville, which was four hours from Cotton Plant. It was still in driving distance, so it made coming home easy when she needed to, but it was the farthest she had ever been from her hometown. Her first real sense of adulthood. It was scary, yet very exciting for her. Culinary school was so unlike high school. Her classmates welcomed her with open arms, and even taught her things the teacher hadn’t. She was so excited to come back home to show her family all the things she had learned. When she finished with school, that’s exactly what she did.
After studying baking, cooking, and even business management; Annie was certain she could come home and start her own business. Being a caterer is what she really wanted to do, so she came back and started looking for anyone who was willing to invest in her dreams. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that easy. She had the talent, she just didn’t have the money to get started. Since she needed money, she started working as a waitress for a local diner. It wasn’t the type of job she wanted in the food industry, but it was money. She did that for awhile, saving what she could and using what she needed to get by. It took her four years before she felt like she had what she needed to get started. The only thing she didn’t exactly have was the space to cook the food, but she had all the supplies and the attitude to get things done. She began running it from her kitchen at first, calling her business Griddle Me This (she thought it was cute, some people called it lame- but whatever, it’s her business.) It’s been two years since she got started, and although she manages to get by, what she really wants is enough money to rent more space. Even a spot at a strip mall would be fine, as long as she had more room. Cooking in her kitchen worked when she was starting out, but now she was getting more orders than she knew what to do with. It wasn’t easy, and managing it was getting harder and harder, but she refused to quit and do anything else. This is what she wanted, so she was going to do whatever it took to make it work.
