↳ A CLOSER LOOK:

Arianna Nohemi Lopez, is the third born daughter of Pedro and Maribel Lopez. Growing up, Ari was always a cheerful and pleasant little girl. She was known as the little girl with the fiery spirit. She always loved making her family smile, especially her siblings.  Like most siblings they’d argue from time to time but what siblings don’t. That didn’t stop Ari from loving them and wanting to be close to them.

More often than not, Ari could be found running around somewhere, ripping holes in her pants and scraping her knees. The little ball of energy always enjoyed being active. Her parents tried to focus her energy by putting her in gymnastic where she’d be able to run and jump around as much as she wanted. Arianna loved it and she was good at it too. Starting from such a young age, she was able to learn how to do some of the most difficult parts of gymnastics. But as she grew up, she found that she wanted to do it less and less.

She started to mellow out as she approached her middle school years. Mainly because middle child syndrome was officially starting to kick in. She felt as if she were invisible in her own family, but strangely… she was okay with it. With her parents focused on her other siblings, Ari felt free spending time on her own.  She liked that she wasn’t the focus of their attention.  This took a toll on her relationship with her siblings a little. As they grew, they started wanting other things. They didn’t really share the common interests they once had. They didn’t spend as much time together mainly because Ari seemed to never be around anymore. Having the attention off of her, Ari would take advantage and avoid coming home as late as she could.

At first she’d spend extra hours at the gym but pretty soon she was out and about roaming the streets. She had found herself making friends with a group of skater kids. She noticed them as she was walking around alone one day and befriended them. They taught her to ride and pretty soon was part of the group. They were chill and Ari liked that about them. Sometimes they’d go for rides and not even talk but just enjoy the sound of their boards skimming across the pavement. There was something freeing about it and Ari was all for it.

Leading the skater life was chill for Ari. She didn’t care for being popular or didn’t feel the need to have to fit in with everyone. But because of her infectious, flirty personality (and incredible latinx looks) people were drawn to her and Ari happily accepted it. As long as she stayed true to who she was, she had no problem welcoming in friends of all kinds.  She loved learning about different cultures and ethnicities she’d encounter on a day to day basis.

Arianna knew she wanted to get out of Cotton Plant. She wanted to experience something new. Going away for college was basically her only way out. She was going to do everything possible to accomplish her goal. It started with picking up random babysitting jobs then working at the mall. She started saving up money in hopes of being able to move to NYC. She applied for colleges out there and even joined the gymnastics team again hoping she’d be able to land a scholarship that would help her get into a school in New York. And luckily, she did. She was able to get into a school and as soon as graduation hit, she was gone. Ari left to study cultural anthropology. She would have to join the gymnastics team but she figured if it would keep her in New York, She’d do it. At this point she was just happy to get away from Cotton Plant.

After getting degree, Ari tried desperately to find jobs in the city so she could continue her education. With having such a unique major, finding jobs became difficult. So Ari resorted to the first job that she thought paid decently, bartending. She became a bartender knowing the the pay was awesome and tips were just good. Work was hard and the hours seemed long but Ari thought she’d be able to make it work. Things were going well for a couple years but  soon enough, bills started piling high and Ari was hit with the reality of having to pay rent in a very expensive city and manage to pay for school at the same time. Not being able to pay rent, Ari started couch surfing staying wherever any of her friends would let her. But this all became too much. She knew she wouldn’t be able to do this forever. She knew it was time to face reality.  She’d have to move back to Cotton Plant. At least there she’d have a roof over her head and she could figure out what she should do with her life.

Moving back was harder on Ari than she thought it would be. She  immediately applied to be a bartender at a bar in town and was hired. Working definitely took her mind off of the fact that her life wasn’t turning out to be the way she wanted it to. Here she was, in her twenties in a tiny ass town in the middle nowhere… bartending. It was a little depressing for her, having to come from such an amazing city back to where she once had tried to get away from.  Slowly but surely, Cotton Plant started to feel like home again. When Mint Julep opened she decided to apply there so she could cut on her commute to work. She was hired as one of their bartenders and has been working there since April.  She actually enjoys meeting the people that come through the bar and loves getting to know the regulars. She isn’t as anti-social as she had become but still has her solitary moments. She has definitely grown throughout the years. She’s learned to try to live in the moment and appreciate what’s happening in the now. Life is too short to let it pass you by.
