Because I love analyzing the four houses
Honestly Im so entranced by the idea of the four houses coexisting. They're all so complimentary to each other, like imagine the massive power force the four combined could be. What bothers me is the blind hate towards a particular one house. They're all entirely based on preference, but that doesn't mean one preference is wrong. That's like saying Peanut Butter and Jelly is better than Ham, it is entirely subjective and wrong to assume you are the only person with enough credibility to answer the question. There's nothing wrong with house pride, I personally have about 10 Hufflepuff things just in my room, but I also respect other houses. They have more to offer than just the Puff house alone, which is why there is three others. Not to mention imagine only getting to pick friends from your house. I LOVE puffs, but my three best friends are Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Slytherin. The purpose of the house system was to heighten the strengths of a particular group, while also making Hogwarts a force to be reckoned with. It was devised to bring similar people together, while simultaneously complementing opposites.
The four houses represent what people value (not necessarily what they are, although I believe in cases like Neville it did). And one of the only reasons house fighting was even so predominant was because of the war, (of course there was obvious house pride, preferring your own over others that's expected, but I believe it was heightened due to the role of death eaters and Voldemort supporters). But who's to say you can't value more than one ideal? Harry Potter is not Divergent, where the characters are genetically programmed to be one thing, Harry Potter characters are 3 dimensional in their beliefs and values. One can obviously admire wit, but find kindness endearing. That's why some people sit longer on the stool than others. Seamus Finnigan himself (I need to check this) sat on the stool for what, 3 minutes? So while he is brave, he can also possess other qualities often referred to with other houses.
Not to mention the endearing inter-house relationships. While I do wish there had been more diversity in house choices, I like real life examples better. Where Gryffindors are brave and rash, Hufflepuffs are kind and loyal, so envision a Gryffindor pushing through a crowd at a concert, holding the Hufflepuff's hand to drag them along as the Puff mutters 'sorry's' through the crowd. They're dependent on each other, the Gryffindor to do what a Hufflepuff would have a hard time achieving, and the Hufflepuff keeping politeness and good spirit in check. Meanwhile, Ravenclaws and Slytherins could literally be an explosive pair. Ravenclaws, in most cases, are deep thinkers, and Slytherins, again stereotypically, are incredibly gifted. So Ravenclaws could pose the 'what if' questions, and Slytherin possess the 'here's how' answers. (could also go vice versa depending on the pairing.) and of course, these can be mix matched and changed 20 times, it wouldn't matter.
Basically what I'm trying to get at is all houses are great and imagine the power of a Loyal, Brave, Witty, Wise squad, that is what Hogwarts was trying to promote. Not segregation but bringing unlikely but complimentary things together.
