A fist came at him from the left and Talon ducked, scything out with his right leg at the same time. Someone toppled onto him and he grabbed them instinctively, rolling them over to use as a shield. A kick meant for his ribs landed on his body shield and Talon stabbed at an ankle with a butterfly knife.
Being ganged up on wasn’t as difficult to survive as most people thought. A group of guys in a crowded alley with only one target would end up hitting each other most of the time. All Talon had to do was stay out of the way and help them along a little.
He knew the dragon tattoo that crept over his right arm meant everyone at school whispered that he was in a gang but the truth was, Talon was a loner. He’d freelance for various criminal organizations, taking small time hits and carrying them out as professionally as possible, but he had been very careful to keep himself from being tied to any one gang. He wasn’t going to be rubbed out as part of part of a gang hit when his loyalties only lay with whomever was paying him at the time.
Occasionally that meant the actual gangs would try to track him down to persuade him to join but so far, Talon had won all those arguments so convincingly that the same gang never tried twice.
This was no different. By the time the fight was done, Talon was the only one conscious. He knelt down by the pile of bodies, efficiently checking the pockets for anything he could use, then jerked his head up at the sound coming from the mouth of the alley. There, standing silhouetted against the light, was one of his classmates.
