ARCHIVED OUTCAST DOSSIER RESTRICTED ACCESS 📂
SUBJECT CLASSIFICATION: Obscuran
COMMON DESIGNATION: Umbrakinetic
SOURCE: Nevermore Academy Occult Studies Wing
FILE STATUS: Incomplete / Redacted / Ongoing Observation
The Obscurans, more commonly referred to as Umbrakinetics, are among the rarest and least understood Outcast classifications recorded at Nevermore Academy. Unlike elemental or corporeal-based Outcasts, Obscurans do not create or control shadow in the conventional sense. They interact with absence negative space, void, emotional shadow, and residual darkness left behind by trauma, death, or suppressed memory. Their abilities are not sourced from darkness itself, but from the space where light fails to reach.
Early records miscategorized Obscurans as necromancers or illusionists. This was later disproven after multiple controlled experiments revealed no ability to raise the dead, fabricate matter, or manifest true darkness. Instead, Obscurans manipulate existing shadow states: the psychological, emotional, and spatial echoes that linger around people and places. Their power is reactive rather than generative. They do not summon they respond.
This reactive nature is what makes them unpredictable. Obscuran abilities fluctuate depending on environment, mental state, proximity to emotional residue, and internal regulation. Unlike Hydes or Gorgons, whose powers follow biological triggers, Obscurans experience empathic overload. Strong emotions, fear, grief, obsession, longing can distort their control. This does not make them stronger. It makes them unstable.
The shadows they influence are not weapons. They are reflections. Obscurans often describe their power as something that “listens back” when they are overwhelmed. The shadows respond not to commands, but to emotional tension. Because of this, Obscurans are trained extensively in grounding practices. Without regulation, power surges can result in physical collapse, dissociation, or prolonged sensory blackouts.
Physiological side effects have been recorded, including:
— sudden drops in body temperature
— fainting or dizziness after overextension
— tremors in hands or limbs
— visual static or shadowed peripheral vision
— temporary loss of speech or motor function
— insomnia and recurring lucid nightmares
Unlike other Outcasts, Obscurans do not exhibit outward signs of activation such as glowing eyes or visible energy discharge. Their abilities are subtle, often unnoticed by bystanders. The most common manifestation is environmental distortion: shadows shifting unnaturally, dimming of nearby light sources, and localized cold. Psychological profiles indicate that Obscurans are often introspective, hyper-observant, and emotionally guarded. Many display heightened empathy, even when attempting to suppress it. This is believed to be because their abilities are tied to emotional perception rather than physical force. They feel before they act.
The most dangerous misconception surrounding Obscurans is that they are “powerful.” They are not. Their limits are severe. Every use of their ability carries a cost: exhaustion, pain, emotional destabilization, and in rare cases, temporary memory loss. Extended exposure to emotionally charged environments can lead to shadow resonance, a state in which the Obscuran becomes overwhelmed by the emotional residue of a space or person. Because of this, Obscurans are not assigned to combat or defensive roles within Nevermore. They are instead classified as sensitive Outcasts and placed under observational protocols. There is no known method to artificially amplify an Obscuran’s power. Attempts to do so have resulted in catastrophic mental collapse in previous test subjects. Shadows cannot be forced. They respond only when they are acknowledged. Obscurans do not dominate darkness. They endure it. Their greatest strength is not what they can do but what they can see.
