thunderstruck
sly as foxes in the field
Jamie fears that of his two MacKenzie uncles, he is more like Dougal - violent, blunt, ruthless. Only focusing on the here and now. And he certainly is, at times - after all, Dougal taught him to fight.
But I think he is much more like Colum - methodical, calculated, intelligent. Always thinking six steps ahead. Managing all of the people around him. Thinking about the long game.
“You champion me, and you exile me, both at the same time. That’s a plan worthy of my brother Colum.”
-- Dougal MacKenzie, 02x10 “Prestonpans”
---
“Do you know, you sound quite like your uncle Colum. He would have thought it through like that.”
“Do I?” The corner of his mouth turned up slightly. “Shall I take that as compliment, Sassenach?”
“I suppose you might as well.”
“Aye, well,” he said thoughtfully.

Day 10 - Prestonpans
The 13 Days of Outlander has returned!
Some of you may remember that for each Season 2 episode, I wrote a companion ficlet. So I’ll be “celebrating” the 13 Days of Season 2 by re-posting a link to the ficlet, as well as providing some backstory about what inspired the story and how I wrote it.
We were blessed with an incredible reunion scene after the battle in 02x10 “Prestonpans.”
But what was running through Jamie’s mind as he left the battlefield and trudged to the field hospital to find Claire? That’s what I explored in “Solace.”
It’s the simple things that mean the most.
Jamie is so ecstatic to see Claire.
Murtagh is so proud to show Claire that he kept his promise - that he watched over Jamie, and brought him back to her.
What an incredible scene.
Day 20 - Favorite Sibling and/or Friendship Scene
The 25 Days of Outlander has returned!
Oh jeez. At the end of 02x10 “Prestonpans” - Rupert and Ross comfort each other and commiserate after they have both lost their best friends.
With a song, of course.
“Down Among The Dead Men” indeed.
Day 18 - Scene That Really Surprised Me
The 25 Days of Outlander has returned!
Oh this was easy - how Dougal so coldly dispatched Lt. Jeremy Foster in 02x10 “Prestonpans.”
Because I was completely expecting Lt. Foster to be taken prisoner, talk to Jamie, become a minor character in the show again.
Hahahaha nope.
Further proof that Dougal truly is bat$hit crazy.
Day 3 - Favorite Bonnie Prince Chuck Scene
The 25 Days of Outlander has returned!
Oh, Bonnie Prince Chuck. How unintentionally hilarious you are. How tragic you are. How creepily touch-feely with Jamie you are...
Anyway. I love this scene at the beginning of 02x10 “Prestonpans”:
Why? So many reasons:
1. Right before this is the first time we see the Prince as a (hapless, wannabe) military leader - taking/ignoring the advice of his generals, when he starts to realize that this rebellion thing is a hell of a lot more complicated than he’d expected
2. Here, side by side, we see the Man Who Would Be King - and the King of Men. Their costumes, postures, facial expressions mirror each other. Brilliant direction. And as to who’s the real King - nay contest
3. Once again, Prince Chuck re-iterates that he has promised God that he will succeed. Jamie is reminded that his boss apparently speaks with God, and is instantly worried. Apparently nothing has changed since Paris.
4. In this scene we also see for the first time Prince Chuck’s tragically hilarious interpretation of Scottish native dress. It’s some kind of kilt with matching coat, and of course decked with gold trim.
What’s even better is that it’s based on a real outfit that the real Prince Chuck actually wore. Which makes me wonder - was the real Chuck just as adorably clueless as this Chuck?
King and Queen
Just look at the similarities between these shots - where Jamie and Claire address their troops, so to speak.
In these four shots we see just how much the Frasers are respected, and revered. For they are true leaders, who inspire those who work with them to rise to the occasion, focus on the task at hand, and do whatever is needed in order to achieve victory.
A victory to which they will lead their troops, at the head of the crowd - at great personal sacrifice.
True royalty. True leadership.
How perfectly matched they are.
