Twenty four years ago, I married ye, Sassenach. I hope I haven’t ever given ye cause to regret it.

Twenty four years ago today, I married ye, Sassenach...I hope ye willna have cause yet to regret it.
-- Jamie to Claire, Drums of Autumn
Watching Jamie speak this iconic line in 04x01 tugged at my heart, of course. Not just because of what he’s saying - but because of how the series slightly modified the line.
In Drums of Autumn, Jamie delivers the line half-jestingly. I hope you don’t - or won’t - have any reasons to regret that hasty decision.
But in 04x01, the meaning behind it is completely different. It’s Jamie expressing his fears, his inadequacies. I hope that I haven’t given you any reason to regret the hasty decision. This line is now much less about the events that have (and shortly will) swirl around them, perhaps making Claire think twice about her marriage writ large. Think twice about whether the life she’s in - because of Jamie, yes, but because of everyone else in it, too - is one she wants.
The line is now all about Jamie expressing that yes, there are always circumstances beyond his control - but what has he done, personally, to reassure Claire? To protect her? What has he done, what has he been able to control, that would perhaps give her second thoughts?
Jamie is beautifully vulnerable, there on the boat with his wife; we know that these words foreshadow something that will happen in very short order, where Jamie will be powerless to protect Claire. His worst fear. For her swore to her on their wedding night - to protect her with his clan, his family, his body.
In light of what’s to come, then - and in the aftermath of that terrible raid - will Jamie’s words haunt him even more? He will fear, greatly so, that his inability to protect Claire will be the one thing that she will hold against him.
She won’t, of course. We know she won’t. But Jamie worries he will never be enough.
Such a small, yet meaningful change to this iconic line. Kudos to Matt Roberts and Toni Graphia for adding so many layers of nuance that are pitch-perfect for Jamie’s character.
