My eye was caught by the bright yellow cover of Seven is a Frozen Number: a Selection of Poetry by Marcus J. Grapes published New Orleans: Aphrodisia Press, 1967.
Throughout its pages sheets of translucent colored tissue papers appear, transforming the text and images through the turning of the pages. The drawings appear to be quick sketches. The drawings and papers set the book apart from other books of poetry. Jack Grapes made the illustrations that accompany his poems which he wrote between September, 1965 and August, 1966.
Grapes is an editor, poet, playwright, and teacher. In New Orleans he self-published two books of selected poetry under Aphrodisia Press, Seven is a Frozen Number, 1967 and his first, A Savage Peace, 1965. Grapes’s life long friend and collaborator Allan Yasnyi contributed the frontispiece for the book.
In Los Angeles, 1989, Jack began a literary Journal called ONTHEBUS, with the goal of highlighting a diverse view of poetry. The journal has featured over 2,000 California poets. He has published over 24 of his own books, and currently teaches and runs his own method writing workshops.
This is a second edition printing of 500 copies.. Our copy is signed by the author.

This was one of two books by Caribbean authors that I was desperate to get a hold of last summer when I decided I wanted to read more works by Caribbean authors in general, and non-Anglophone Caribbean writers in particular. All the copies of the 1998 Faber edition I found online were used too expensive to justify buying, for a book I had never read and that was not new.
Synopsis: A marathon game of dominoes, lasting from early morning to dusk, and involving four men for whom the game is a trigger for social, political and sexual rivalries against a background of colonial unrest. A complacent bailiff and his feckless taxi-driver partner are deserted by their wives for a mixture of personal and idealistic reasons, and the resulting turmoil leads on to murder and suicide as the tensions work themselves out. As well as being a novel of character, Double Play offers a powerful picture of colonial and attitudes in the mid-twentieth century.
