{Reading a very interesting article on eunuchs.

Didn't know it used to be a sort of third-gender option historically...kind of blows my argument out of the water, but whatever, the prof doesn't know so I'll act like it's not.

I think it's interesting to note, then, based on the reasoning in this article, that Varys identifies as a eunuch; it's actually a wholly different subset. See, if he ever just called himself "castrated", it would imply that he still sees himself as a denizen of the male gender--but he's accepted his castration and the social, emotional, psychological, and physical changes it has prompted within his person, leading to him fairly being able to identify fully as "eunuch". If anyone actually reads this damned blog or has any interest in the argument, I'm taking notes on it now and will happily share them with anyone who wants them after my paper's written. Making it this far in says you probably honestly give a rat's ass about me, this character, and my blog, so why don't you go on 'head and shoot me an ask or something; I really wanna bring Varys back, if at all possible.

In S2, Varys meets Shae and Tyrion gets all defensive; I'm watching the clip out of context right now. So when I first saw the scene, I took it as a surreptitious show of power and knowledge ("Look, I met your secret, I know more than you credit me for'), but I didn't read any malice into it--no threat, y'know? Just, like, a reminder of what he could and why he makes a good ally. But watching it without the haze of the surrounding scenes on it, I'm left a little...perturbed. Because it looks like maybe it was a threat, in the very cloak-and-dagger, speak softly sort of way courts do.

So which is it most likely to be, in accordance with their (Tyrion and Varys') relation in the books?
