Life on the slower side
I have found MY driving irritation now. People who drive into the intersection on a green light intending to make a left turn and then they wait until the light turns yellow or red and the oncoming traffic stops before they make their turn. I know it’s not illegal, but it is when half of the time the light has turned red before they actually make the turn. In the meantime, oncoming traffic has to wait for them to get out of the way or as I’m tempted to do, run them over! I am sure there are lots of places where people do this, but Amarillo wasn’t one of them and therefore, I think I’ve forgotten that this problem exists.
We arrived safe and sound in Overgaard on Thursday. We have settled into our site although we are still debating on how to set things up outside. It is so nice getting out of the city. I told Steve that it feels like we are camping. The place we were at the last month was in the city and it felt like it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice park, really nice but the sites are kind of “cold” and close. Here we are more spread out and it feels peaceful. Aspen is having a bit of trouble with the little rocks and pine needles here. They are sticking in his little paws. We went to town today and bought him some boots but they are a difficult to put on, so it will take effort to put them on him every time we go to the dog park or walk the RV park. BUT they did protect his paws. He didn’t seem to mind them too much and after a few minutes, he could even walk like a normal dog in them. (For a while there, he was marching around like a guard at Buckingham Palace!)
We went to church today in Show Low which is about 35 minutes from here. The congregation was small (around 50) but we wonder if they have more in the summer months. They seemed friendly (better than the place we visited in Apache Junction that had only around 25 people and NO ONE spoke to us.) We will make it our home congregation for the next 6 months. We went to Walmart to get our groceries for the week and ate at Panda Express. Show Low is smaller than we’d thought or hoped—no PetSmart, no Sam’s, no Chili’s…no mall…but it’ll do for 6 months. Our plan is to make a trip into the “big city” every Sunday for church and to buy groceries.
There’s not much going on at the RV park right now. The rest of the “crew” will arrive this Thursday. The park will officially open April 15. For now, there’s just clean up and site preparation to do. I looked at the bookings and we don’t have much in April or May but that doesn’t mean much. There will still be annuals (people who have paid for a site for a full year) that will arrive unannounced in the next 2 months. The weather is a bit unstable right now so a lot of people won’t arrive for a while. They are saying a winter mix later this week! But today was beautiful (high 60’s) and we were able to take Aspen on a long walk.
Aspen-the problem “child”
I had another “yahoo” moment this morning. I left our trailer to walk to work at 8:57 and I still go there 1 minute early. I think it’ll be even a shorter “commute” to work when we get up to Elk Pines! What a life! In March, the office hours dropped back to 9-4 on weekdays since we are starting the off-season. This week, they are 9-2. (I hope I can handle the long day. HA!) We had a traumatic event at the dog park the other day. I took Aspen to the park before work to take care of his business and it was quiet for a bit but a guy came along with a hunting type dog and interrupted our peace. I’m pretty sure we’ve been in the park with him before and nothing…but today I guess he was tired of not having anything to “hunt” and he came over to Aspen and took him to the ground and had his mouth around Aspen’s neck. I think I was in shock…thinking surely he was playing and then I realized Aspen looked scared and so finally the owner came and took grabbed his dog off of Aspen. I decided to put Aspen on the leash for the rest of the time just in case, the other dog decided to come and finish him off. Of course, the owner of the other dog left his dog off the leash. Probably shouldn’t mess with office staff and their pets cause I went in and complained and they put a note in his file. I think Aspen will recover from the trauma; not so sure about his momma though. Update: I ran into the dog owner 2 days later at the dog park. He says, “Thanks for turning me into the office.” (Did he forget I work in the office?!?) I told him that I felt I needed to let the office know about what happened. Then he says, “I’m glad to see you have your dog on a leash” (as he’s letting HIS prance around the park unleashed.) I told him it was to protect my dog from his and that my dog did NOT attack his. I then told him that I’d heard there’d been other reported problems regarding his dog…all he could say was “Well…” and that was that. We have seen them around the park some but so far not at the dog park when we’ve been there. I think it’s time for him to head north! We got our departure date today. We should be leaving Thursday for the mountains. We already took a “field trip” to Heber-Overgaard to check things out. It took us around 2.5 hours. (Pics attached.) It’s definitely pretty up there. I’m not real sure what we’ll be doing when we get there since the park doesn’t officially open until April 15 but I’m sure we’ll find something to keep us busy. Steve earned us a “star” just now. We are parked up at the front of the park and saw a motor home come into the park as we were finishing up dinner. He decided to turn on his walkie talkie although he wasn’t really on duty and Janet was trying to get someone to come help them park. After some debate, Steve responded to Janet and headed to see what he could do to help. As a result of that, Janet told us that if were interested in coming back here in October to work another season, we would be more than welcome! Made us feel good and we have honestly talked about it. It’s a nice park, very friendly, the weather should be really nice Oct-March and Madison will be playing ball at Arizona Christian in the spring, so we could potentially see some games. But we’ll see…it’s really early to decide what we think of this new gig and I’m not sure if I want to be locked into one location when we could be going to different places.
