Celestine Martínez, protagonist of the One Siren’s Soul series!
I’m participating in #OwwieSeptember (for as much as I can, anyways ^^’) and the first day is to introduce your protagonist! Despite having four main characters in One Siren’s Soul, I decided to go with Celestine, since she’s a narrator throughout the series--so here’s a neat graphic I made up for her!
You can also expect this template being used for my other OSS characters, too. I enjoy it too much. c;
Transcript below the cut!
Celestine is... well, no one’s quite sure. She’s a rude brat with morality and trust issues, we know that for sure. But her age? Her origins? No clue. She doesn’t have a clue, either, since she can’t remember anything beyond just over twenty years ago. What we do know? She looks around 14, is missing an eye, has a weird irremovable silver anklet, a strong Castilian accent, a phobia of water, and a bit of an obsession with collecting things that really aren’t hers.
Class: Siren
Pronouns: She/They/He

“So... Is anyone going to explain what the hell is going on? Or am I supposed to assume we’ve all lost our minds?”
Ingenuity: 5/5

Combat: 3.5/5
Magic: ??? [The circles used for the rest of the traits are broken for this one, as if suffering from a glitch.]
[To the right of the text, there are three circular images. The top is of a celestite geode, the middle is of dark blue fish scales, and the bottom is of lightning against a grey sky. To the bottom right of the text is a ship’s porthole which has been edited to show an image of a black pearl in it. Half of the edit’s background is a light beige. The right half is an image of light beige wooden planks.]
Well, that magic rank is really funky, huh? Wonder what that’s about.
Please ask me if you’d like to be added to any of my taglists!
1920’s gay slang, known as Polari, was based on the street patter of Thieves’ Cant and incorporates some of the vocabularies of Romani people and Travellers.
In my story, the demons have their own version of Polari which also incorporates some Latin and Akkadian words; it’s mostly only spoken by the Circus fey, but even the most respectable and well-hidden demons can recognise each other with a well-placed word.
Sunken German battleships. This one is fascinating. After WW1, the German navy intentionally scuttled their own fleet at Scapa Flow off the coast of Scotland. (One of my characters, Mr Mitchell, is working in a dive crew to salvage them for the high-quality steel in their construction.)
Many of the ships were still there until the 1960’s, when scientists discovered something annoying about modern steel: it all contained a high level of background nuclear radiation from the world’s atomic testing from the 40’s onwards. For cars or buildings this wasn’t such a concern, but for the steel required to build Geiger counters and sensitive equipment, this background radiation was enough to give a false reading.
The scientists needed a source of pre-nuclear steel, and found it: the submerged remnants of the 1917 German fleet. So if you can get your hands on a vintage 60’s Geiger counter, odds are you can bore people with a story about its maritime origins.
Condom tins. Because it just wouldn’t be an Amanitus story without unnecessary details of obscure erotica. In the 1920’s, rubbers were wide-spread but illegal; you had to buy them under the counter, and they came in tins that looked almost exactly like cigarette tins: very clever and discreet. There was a clue in the labelling though: condom brand names often used the number three, such as 3 Kings or 3 Nails.
Appearance: Average height; slender, fragile build; porcelain skin; dark brown eyes; long, fine chestnut-colored hair; has constant dark circles
Personality: Introverted, creative, writer, stubborn, bent on as much independence as she can grasp, observant, longs to be normal, sarcastic, blunt
Summary: Jane is the daughter of a self-made nobleman and notorious arms dealer, Charles Harrington. Since before she was introduced to society, she (along with her younger sister, Sarah) was groomed by her father to be a suitable partner to whomever her father determines will be her husband and the future head of Lord Harrington’s deadly business. However, unlike her sister, Jane has been a frail, sickly thing since childhood so her specialty lies not in physical feats, but ones of the mind. She is the one who accompanies Lord Harrington when he meets with potential clients or partners. While Sarah may be their father’s gun and dagger, Jane is his eyes and ears with her sharply trained intuition. Though her unassuming presence is by far her greatest weapon, one which she has used to persuade the greatest of secrets from her father’s enemies.
She had been able to maintain a sense of altered normalcy for most of her life. That was until, in late April 1888, she contracted pneumonia, which damaged her lungs and led to her developing hydrothorax (pulmonary edema). The illness confines her to their home on her best days, or her bed for days (or possibly weeks) on her worst. This has been a crippling blow to Jane for multiple reasons, the chief being that it has completely robbed her of what little independence she had and has left her an object of pity.
Because I haven’t really talked about my WIP yet, a few vocab terms so people know what I’m referring to XD:
the Consolidate: an organization spread across all three countries (Wulian, Alsolus, Kahnaere) that all magic users are required to register with; they’re kind of like “world protectors” and do a lot of fighting because there are ~monsters~ in this world
manifest: fancy term for having magic; term is subject to change
Su, trainee in the Wulian Consolidate. Two years of training should have been enough for him to graduate and get a post in a city or town, but still he lingers. Su doesn’t lack skill or talent—in fact, he’s one of the top performers in both combat and use of his manifest—but none of the three commanders he’s been under so far has signed him off. Perhaps Commander Shentu is the commander he needs... but we’ll never know because plot events are about to send him off in a different direction.
What the other trainees don’t know is that this is the third name Su has taken on... if you don’t count the ones he’s worn only for a day or two, a month or two, shedding them like snakeskin when he outgrows them.
[Picture ID at bottom of post under Keep Reading.]
Those that have known Su, or Fen, or Wei, or whichever name he was using at the time, have commented that it's fitting he is an illusionist. Manifests often do match the personality, after all. They glimpse the fleetingness in his personality, smoke in the wind, the smiles one moment and bared teeth the next... and decide that no, in the end, they do not know Su. There are too many secrets, and no one has been able to peel back the layers.
Ironically, having something that most of the population does not both raises and lowers the value of your life. Having a manifest means assignment to the most dangerous, demanding job: protecting the world from the monsters that roam.
The brighter you burn, the sooner you run out. Burn bright, burn quick. Blaze, blaze, as bright as you can. Live, live, as much as you can, before it becomes too late and your life is inevitably snuffed out.
It gives him a thrill, though. The adrenaline rush that comes with facing down something greater, life distilled down to the bare bones of survival—hurt or be hurt. Kill or be killed.
Maybe it's time to choose a new name. He's not satisfied here either.
This post is part of #owwieseptember! I’m afraid of putting links in posts, but if you go to the tumblr ow-writeblr and search the tag, the about post should be easy to find!
[ID: Su Caldwell, Illusionist. “Look in the mirror and tell me who you see. Then look again. Look again.”
Four pictures of Su: the largest image pictures him with a long black braid of hair, loose hair framing his face on either side, a black shirt and red leather jacket. His eyes are a dark brown, he is smiling with tired eyes, and a scar crosses his face from below his left cheekbone and reaches diagonally till the bottom of his chin, cutting across his bottom lip.
The second image is smaller, slightly faded, and pictures him with loose long straight disheveled black hair, tired eyes, and a frown. He has the same scar. He wears a dark grey shirt covered by a brown jacket with a turned out fur collar.
The third image is even smaller and more faded, and pictures him with a knot of black hair on his head and more hair hanging neatly down over his shoulders. He has worried eyebrows; wears black eyeliner, red lipstick, and pink tasseled earrings. He wears a plain white long shirt.
The fourth image is even smaller and more faded, and pictures him looking younger with straight hair cut to just above his shoulders. He is smiling, has small circle earrings. He wears a sheer shirt textured with patches of sparkles/glitter over a black tank top.]
From Capture the Moon - the series as a whole is a Black Butler fic which focuses on Sebastian and Ciel post-s2, but Helen (an oc) is the star of this particular story
1961. The middle of the cold war. Helen, a government scientist who is involved in a demon contract, tries to make her way through the deadly intrigue of her work, convinced that any evil they do is for the greater good... or is it?
Since September’s OW event is one day away, I thought I’d share some main characters from my two original works that are currently in progress. And credit goes to @chromehoplite for coming up with the idea to use picrew to create the ow character images. <3
The first set are two characters from my Victorian supernatural romance, currently with the “holding” title of Fangs and Posies. (Note: I just had to do the best I could as far as their hair and clothing goes. I couldn’t find any that had comparable clothing designs)
Blog: Fangs and Posies
Summary: England 1888 ~ Lord Harrington and his family relocate to their countryside estate to provide his eldest daughter, Jane, an opportunity to comfortably live out her last days. However, during their absence, another noble family has moved into the nearby area. One which immediately takes interest in the Harrington daughters- one of sinister intent.
Protagonist: Jane Harrington
Main antagonist: Warrick Aldridge (this is as old as I could make him appear, but in the story, his appearance is roughly around 25)
The second set is for an apocalyptic sci-fi titled Dark Star.
Blog: Dark Star
Summary: War has reduced Earth to a barren, radioactive wasteland. In a desperate attempt to save what remains of humanity, the President of the World Alliance negotiates an accord which will allow humans to begin a new life on an alien planet. However, once the humans arrive to their new home, it is discovered that things aren't as they had seemed and they’re left questioning- was such a new beginning truly worth it or would it have been better if humanity had become extinct?
Protagonist: Hazel Walker
And her fiance, Benjamin (Ben) Thompson
I look forward to sharing more with you all about these stories in the coming month!
(Not sure if I'm doing this correctly, so please feel free to correct me if I'm not.)
I lifted inspo for the main character of my urban fantasy novel, With A Bloody Smile (tag found here), from many different forms of media. Supernatural is one of my favorite TV shows, and so the character of Finn, the hunter, is very similar to Dean Winchester. Dean’s attitude and mannerisms, as well as his way of speaking and the tone of his voice, were a huge influence on Finn. However, Dean was not the only influence. Finn’s personality is also inspired by a couple of my favorite professional wrestlers. I even share some traits with Finn.
I’m really hoping to flesh him out as the story develops.
Captain Io Sørenson, antagonist of One Siren’s Soul!
I’m participating in #OwwieSeptember (for as much as I can, anyways ^^’) this year! The third day (which technically I’m late for, shhh) is to introduce your antagonist--so I made up a graphic edit for Captain Io! She’s only the antagonist of the first book, though~
There’s a few fun spoilers here! c; Transcript below the cut!
The daughter of a well-known Royal Navy captain, but a captain that no one knew had a daughter, Caption Io deals with people’s constant disbelief of the worthiness of the title. This isn’t much helped by her tiny build and youthful appearance. Of course, the way she deals with these people is beginning to seep in, her method often making use of her blade and her almost inhumanly swift reflexes. Many a sailor now knows not to cross the woman with lightning in her veins.
Class: Unrealized Alpha
Pronouns: She/Her
Age: 26 Years
“Disloyalty will not be tolerated aboard my ship. Choose your next actions wisely, and you may yet live.”
Diligence: 4/5
Obstinacy: >5/5
Combat: 5/5
Magic: 3/5
[To the right of the text, there are three circular images. The top is of the hilt of a bronze officer’s saber, the middle is of a sailfish’s dorsal fin, and the bottom is of the milky way. To the bottom right of the text is a ship’s porthole which has been edited to show an image of lightning against a purple stormy sky. Half of the edit’s background is a light beige. The right half is an image of light beige wooden planks.]
What the heck is an “Unrealized Alpha”? Nyehehehee spoilers~
