Governors Ridge is a line of spiky peaks on the east side of Mount Rainier. The highest point at 6,620 feet is called Governors Peak, and there is also a spire called Governors Needle. The ridge is made of Ohanapecosh Formation rocks that formed from ancient volcanoes 35-28 million years ago. Volcanic vents plugged by solidified lava are visible in Barrier Peak at the southern end of Governors Ridge. The ridge can be accessed from the Owyhigh Lakes Trail in the summer or viewed from a distance from Sunrise Road or Tipsoo Lake, where it frames Mount Rainier as you look west.
