Brand new Latin vinyl bomb from Sydney trio OYOBI featuring dancefloor-ready interpretations of the GIL SCOTT-HERON classic The Bottle. On the A-side, right-on politico-poet Gil Scott-Heron's tune gets a a SPANISH-language workout featuring Colombian-born vocalist KAIMÁN JIMÉNEZ (from the ARIA Nominated band Watussi and el Gran Mono Picó Sound System). On the B-side, completely different Latin rhythms with timbale roles, a punchy bass motif and NuYorican-style piano underscore Oyobi's second workout which rides a clubbier backbeat and features the original English lyrics delivered by sublime singer and longtime collaborator KAREN LEE ANDREWS.

NEW SYDNEY MUSIC: OYOBI feat. ANDREW BUKENYA – Shiver | OYOBI feat. BEN SEKALI – Someday (We’ll All Be Free)
Two more unmissable OYOBI cover versions pressed to vinyl and exclusive to this 45. On one side they team up with soul vocalist BEN SEKALI for a gospel-tinged, Black Lives Matter-themed rethink of the overlooked Gap Band & Stevie Wonder tune ‘Someday (We’ll All Be Free)‘. On the flipside, gregarious and much-loved Sydney singer (& Sunday Sanctuary) host ANDREW BUKENYA – who was one of George…
Hello and happy new year to all my fellow planeswalkers. Welcome back for another Commander deck tech; this week we’re going to be looking at a tribal list for an old legend from Kamigawa. A quick disclaimer for those of you who follow my usual articles: our list tonight may not be a budget deck. That said, I will still prioritize cheaper alternatives to better-known cards.
Our deck tonight is, as the general suggests, tribal spirits. Because of white’s inherent weakness in ramp and card advantage, we’re expanding our parameters to put together a list that doesn’t quite fit within our regular articles.
As always, we’ll first begin with RAMP. This deck will include a number of rocks such as Mind Stone, Hedron Archive, and Dreamstone Hedron by necessity, and fortunately these also help with our next package. Though it doesn’t follow our tribal focus, Knight of the White Orchid, Boreas Charger, and Kor Cartographer can all fetch additional Plains from the deck straight into play.
Next we’re taking a look at CARD ADVANTAGE, one of white’s biggest weaknesses. Most of our inclusions here are artifact-based: Vanquisher’s Banner and Icon of Ancestry each help you find more creatures of our type, while Endless Atlas and even Bygone Bishop can gain us further draw.
For REMOVAL, we’re in the best color. For the most part we’ll be using generic white spells such as Swords to Plowshares, Return to Dust, Crib Swap, and Afterlife. We do have two special inclusions, however: Niko-Onna and Terashi’s Grasp. For graveyard hate that plays into our tribe, Remorseful Cleric can bog a player and can be recurred through our later inclusions.
Finally, we get into the meat of our deck: TRIBAL synergies. Long-Forgotten Gohei grants a small buff to our spirits and discount any additional Arcanes you choose to include. Drogskol Cavalry can turn each spirit you gain into life, while Kindred Boon protects your most important creatures. To close out the game, Obelisk of Urd can provide a substantial pump to your tribe while Radiant Destiny allows you to swing freely.
Next we need to include lots of additional SPIRITS AND ARCANES. Chief among them is Blinking Spirit, which can return itself to your hand for free at instant speed. You’ll also want a handful of Soulshift creatures: Kami of the Honored Dead, Kami of the Palace Fields, Torii Watchward, and Hundred-Talon Kami have the highest Soulshift numbers, while Moonlit Strider can protect your general from red wipes and spot removal. Ethereal Haze can fog and trigger your general for a single white and Otherworldly Journey can trigger your general while flickering a creature. For spirit-themed board wipes, March of Souls and Kirtar’s Wrath can both leave you with creatures afterward.
Though it isn’t as fast or powerful as other white generals, Oyobi gives you a unique theme and substantial token output. Make sure to include lots of protection and recursion so that you can keep your key cards in play. Until next time, see you on the battlefield.
