No matter who or what you are, you will one day find yourself confronted with an entity far more powerful than yourself. Xiao learned this when standing opposite Morax at his mistress’ behest. Morax himself learned this when the heavens commanded him to do their bidding. No doubt, Osial has had a similar experience. If so, Xiao wonders if his lack of fear is born from foolishness or a bout of detached realism. (All beings die, whether they are mortal or divine. What point is there in fearing what constitutes but a natural endpoint of life?)
“ Why tell me this? ” asks Xiao, more curious than callous. He himself doesn’t fear death, but he fears being controlled by another like he once was. He fears what he might do without Morax’ hand acting as a leash. ...Perhaps his very existence is what makes him tremble.
