Olympia Zine Fest tabler spotlights! Name: Liuxing Johnston / LemonLiu From: Olympia, WA Zines: Moon Child, The Art of Losing You, Invasion, I Did That! ididthat.smackjeeves.com lemonliu32 on instagram What is your favorite zine of the moment? "Not Straight, Not White, Not Male". It helped me come out to myself as a lesbian. I read it and then cried into a plate of hash browns afterward while texting my high school crush at the Denny's in Lacey.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I try not to think of Olympia but when I do it's a lot of passive aggression and my one white ex who was too into anime.
What’s your favorite zine hack? Procrastinate until a week before the local zine fest and let the mania hit.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? In the morning, I'll be The Lesbian Devil and at night I'm gonna be a hobbit with my roommate.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Thinking of a fresh copy of my work in some black and brown hands.
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? Rainy to the point where the whole Olympia Center smells like wet dog
What workshop are you the most stoked about? Shrinky Dinks!! 🦀🦀
Olympia Zine Fest 2017 tabler spotlights!
Name: Alecia Gatlin From: Hillsboro, OR Zines: Joint Spasm, 279, January Dailies, It Feels Bittersweet www.aleciagatlin.com aaaleciaaa.tumblr.com twitter.com/schmalecia What is your favorite zine of the moment? "Mukbang zine" by Joy San is one of my new faves, but the entire "My Complicated Relationship With Food" series by Zachary Auburn is my favorite.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? Mountains, riot grrrl, but the beer mostly.
What’s your favorite zine hack? Letting InDesign do all the page collation for me because I suuuck at pagination.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? Griffin McElroy .. you know ;)
What motivates you to finish a zine? Seeing the amazing work my friends are doing is a huge motivator for me to finish so we can all trade zines together.
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest?S W E A T E R W E A T H E R
What workshop are you the most stoked about? They all look absolutely amazing, but I'm pretty down to relive my childhood and make some shrinky dinks with Liz Yerby!
Olympia Zine Fest 2017 Tabler Spotlights!
Name & location: Niamh Timmons, Edmonds, WA
Zines: Notes From A Failed Sex Worker, Trans Sexual Geographies, Disabled Comics #1, Run Away, Macrophage #1
You can find Niamh on tumblr as 'callmeamab' and twitter as @qtdodger.' Niamh will also be reading at Saturday night’s post-expo zine reading, 7 pm at Obsidian! Check them out!
What is your favorite zine of the moment? My favorite zine right now is Spider Teeth. It's been on my mind a lot. It's also the zine that made me want to make zines.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I used to live in Olympia when I went to Evergreen and I kinda have a fond attachment to its weird rural and urban mix. Also, shitty roommates. Also also, Sleater-Kinney.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? I've been wanting to do a cosplay for a while of Reki from Haibane Renmei or one of Sakura's outfits from Cardcaptor Sakura and I might just use it for halloween.
What motivates you to finish a zine? I really struggle with motivation because of mental health stuff. I can be really productive for a short period and then struggle for the rest.
What’s your weather prediction for this year’s fest? I think it's probably going to be overcast with some rain. If the sun and clear skies do show up, it'll still be raining. That's what Olympia does.
What workshop are you the most stoked about? I'm most excited for Nia King's book self-publishing workshop. I don't know if a book is something I ever want to do, but I want to at least have the potential skills.
One of our post-expo events! Liberation: A Zine reading with OZF guest of honor Nia King + more. Facebook event here. Check out the full schedule of zine fest weekend events here.
Olympia Zine Fest Tabler Spotlights!
Name, zines, location: Nicki Yowell, 'Za the Pizza Zine, Portland OR
What is your favorite zine of the moment? I really enjoy other food zines but also comix and unexpected gross out stuff. I snagged a photo mini-zine at the Portland Zine Symposium in July that was nothing but scabs. As in high-res scanned photos of scabs from this person's group of friends. Pretty gnarly.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? Washington is only a couple minutes drive from my house in Portland so Olympia never seems that far away. It's got that small town Pacific Northwest feel, super community-driven and comfortable with the added bonus of water and the ambiance of screeching gulls. And some rad, affordable food too!
What’s your favorite zine hack? I wish after doing this for almost a decade I had more! I've found that super floppytown zines, especially the thick ones, benefit from a makeshift book weight. Now, in fancy bookbinding settings you can get a classy looking one. But bricks or other thick books can work just as well in a pinch.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? This question has been on my mind a lot! Last year my partner and I were the twins from The Shining. We found the perfect dresses and wigs somehow. Topping that is going to be quite the challenge. Maybe we'll have to be another set of famous and/or creepy twins?
What motivates you to finish a zine? I am notoriously always finishing things last minute, even after years of figuring out to start earlier. There never seems to be enough time! Or maybe I have a tendency to tack things on along the way? At any rate, deadlines are great motivators but what really gets me productive is knowing I'm finishing a zine for an event: a release, a zine fest, workshop, etc. Having an audience and something new to put out is the best motivator!
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? I'm seeing showers in our forecast. Or maybe the drippy water gods will give us poor paper peddlers some mercy this time. As long as it's not snowing I'll consider it another beautiful misty day.
What workshop are you the most stoked about? To be honest, I rarely am ever able to attend workshops at zine fests unless I'm teaching them. Ha! Every event has so much fascinating stuff going on but between tabling and mingling I rarely seem to make them. I'll have to check some out this time around.
