Olympia Zine Fest tabler spotlights! Name: Liuxing Johnston / LemonLiu From: Olympia, WA Zines:Â Moon Child, The Art of Losing You, Invasion, I Did That! ididthat.smackjeeves.com lemonliu32 on instagram What is your favorite zine of the moment? "Not Straight, Not White, Not Male". It helped me come out to myself as a lesbian. I read it and then cried into a plate of hash browns afterward while texting my high school crush at the Denny's in Lacey.Â
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I try not to think of Olympia but when I do it's a lot of passive aggression and my one white ex who was too into anime.
What’s your favorite zine hack? Procrastinate until a week before the local zine fest and let the mania hit.Â
What are you gonna be for Halloween? In the morning, I'll be The Lesbian Devil and at night I'm gonna be a hobbit with my roommate.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Thinking of a fresh copy of my work in some black and brown hands.
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? Rainy to the point where the whole Olympia Center smells like wet dog
What workshop are you the most stoked about? Shrinky Dinks!! 🦀🦀  Â
Olympia Zine Fest 2017 tabler spotlights! Name: Eileen Chavez From: Portland, OR Zines: Leen Zines 1-5, A Perpetual Dance, A Rotten Bundle, You Do You, Do You Really Want to Delete This File?, Party in the USA, Please Scribble in Me. Links: greenmango227.tumblr.com https://www.instagram.com/sloris227 What is your favorite zine of the moment? When Language Runs Dry Issue 5 - I picked this zine up at the Portland Zine Symposium this past July and I had a very strong emotional resonance with it. This zine series shares personal accounts of writers, poets, and comics artists navigating identity, capitalism, mental-health, care-giving, hopefulness and support in relation to dealing with chronic pain.Â
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I had a friend that I went to college with named Olympia who was from Olympia. I also have a close childhood friend who moved here not too long ago and one time when I visited during the hottest part of the summer we went to a swimming spot with beavers and large fish that kept trying to munch on my legs. Â
What’s your favorite zine hack? I like to make a mini zine model (printing out thumbnails of my pages) in order to figure out/ mess with the layout since sometimes my zines aren’t always drawn in a linear style. It also makes the layout part feel more tactile -which helps my creative process. I also get a bonus tiny illegible zine as a memento.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? I’ve wanted to be Bjork for forever but I also have this bob wig from last year that I could potentially use to be Diane from Twin Peaks. Also potentially gumby.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Usually deadlines for festivals and events. I like to have something new at every tabling event or perform at and almost always scramble at the last second to get everything put together
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest?Hmmm, light sweater season! A bit of sun, golden foliage, some rain, aka the dreamiest weather...
What workshop are you the most stoked about? I’m really looking forward to reading with Nia King and other super inspiring artists Saturday night! Also I always love making shrinky dinks and the workshop is led by my bud Liz Yerby.

"Mukbang zine" by Joy San is one of my new faves, but the entire "My Complicated Relationship With Food" series by Zachary Auburn is my favorite.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? Mountains, riot grrrl, but the beer mostly.
What’s your favorite zine hack? Letting InDesign do all the page collation for me because I suuuck at pagination.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? Griffin McElroy .. you know ;)
What motivates you to finish a zine? Seeing the amazing work my friends are doing is a huge motivator for me to finish so we can all trade zines together.
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest?S W E A T E R Â W E A T H E R
What workshop are you the most stoked about? They all look absolutely amazing, but I'm pretty down to relive my childhood and make some shrinky dinks with Liz Yerby!

Zines, Punk Rock, tall trees, foggy air and riot grrrl
What are you gonna be for Halloween? Scared. Booo!
What motivates you to finish a zine? Helping the kitties! House of Dreams zine is donation only and $1 of every Moonpuss beanie sold is donated to House of Dreams NO KILL cat shelter.
What is your weather prediction for this year’s fest? Slightly cloudy, cool and crisp with a showering of punk.
What workshop are you the most stoked about? Making a BIG ZINE!Â

What’s your favorite zine hack? Batching assembly, especially for binding.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? The giver of candy. I'm practicing at Zine Fest, so come by table 13 for a treat.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Being excited about the concept or content carries me through the process.
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? Chilly, with a few sunny highlights

What is your favorite zine of the moment? My dear friend and chef Rachel Moore just released a fat positive cookzine called "Dinner Rollz" and I'm pretty obsessed with it. It's chock full of delicious recipes and journaling activities that can help you honor your fat body and discover joy in every bite. Plus, it's pretty darn punny.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I associate Olympia with a rad and inclusive community of zine creators. I look forward to OZF every year because of it -- it's my favorite show I do!
What’s your favorite zine hack? Using my work printer after hours to make those sweet sweet copies... Shhh.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? A slice of pizza.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Moving onto the next project, honestly. I have a long list of zines I want to create...
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? Crossing my fingers for sweater weather!
What workshop are you the most stoked about? Combating Fatphobia with Molly Bess! I'm so stoked that more fat-centric talks and workshops are popping up in the zine community again. It is definitely something near and dear to me and it makes my fat lil heart so happy.

What is your favorite zine of the moment? I have been currently jamming pretty hard on local Portland artist Jenny Vu. Â Her art gets straight to the point about a lot of feelings I have.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? My beautiful, wonderful friend Hannah who lives there. Â The joy she brings me, the talent she has, and how happy Olympia makes her.
What’s your favorite zine hack? Fold-ups are like a magic trick.  There's so many different ways to do them with so many different results.  Tiny little wizard pieces.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? Torn between Sarah Connor or Bianca Stratford.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Signing up for festivals and expos is always a great deadline and motivator.  But I find this really only works for smaller, more fun and lighthearted pieces.  For the big ones, I gotta let them sit inside me until they are ready to come out.  I have a deadline of my 30th birthday for the next big one to be due.  I feel it moving around in there. Â
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? Fingers crossed for sweater weather!
What workshop are you the most stoked about? Shrinky Dinks with Liz Yerby!Â

What is your favorite zine of the moment? I have been really into Liz Suburbia's "Cyanide Milkshake" zines. I love her comics and the grab bag of subjects and formats is really impressive and fun to read.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? The Bread Peddler is the only bakery I'm aware of in the PNW that makes schnekken (German "little snail" pastries) and I look forward to them almost as much as the Olympia Zine Fest!
What’s your favorite zine hack? If you print it smaller than you drew it, the mistakes shrink proportionately.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? John Cena
What motivates you to finish a zine? I sign up for festivals and speaking events and treat them as deadlines for projects I'm working on. That sounds irresponsible, and it can sometimes be stressful, but usually it's pretty effective. Having something new to share in time for an event is so satisfying!
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? Chilly crop top weather.
What workshop are you the most stoked about? I'm very excited to read with Nia King and other talented zinesters after tabling on Saturday.
Taylor Dow's great big comic looks like so much fun!
Workshop flyer by our organizer, Chris! Our workshop schedule also lives on our website.
Olympia Zine Fest 2017 tabler spotlights!
Name: Liz Yerby (Liz is our 2017 art contest winner and will also be hosting the shrinky dink workshop!) From: Portland, OR Zines:Â Suck it Picasso, city mouse, the new yerby, what Marcie worries about, Marcie is still worried, sir is this love? lizyerby.com Instagram.com/lizyerby lizyerby.tumblr.com
What is your favorite zine of the moment? That’s so tricky!  The last zine I read was Reverse Flaneur by Sabine Rear (Sabine got nominated for a dang ignatz!) and it made me really happy.  Sabine has a solid knowledge of art history and I just want her to explain all the art to me, because I couldn’t sit through that part of school.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I’ve never been to Olympia! I imagine it’s really green with lots of trees, and I’m worried it will have lots of steep hills, because this is what my anxiety is projecting. I also have anxious worries it’s like really pacific northwest hip, and somehow I’ll appear super Southern.  Which is very silly, because I’ve been in portland eight years and now no one ever guesses I’m from the South.
What’s your favorite zine hack? I don’t have any good tricks because I always make things overly complicated! I’m dreaming of making a zine that’s a fun shape, like a cat silhouette, but I haven’t thought of a perfect project for it yet.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? I’ll probably make something last minute.  Last year I drew on tattoos and made a lil’ hat and became a sailor.  Maybe this year I’ll be a sailor scout, because they do such cool poses!
What motivates you to finish a zine? My big thing is that I draw or write comics a little bit every day whether or not I’m motivated.  I end up with a lot of comics about feeling sad or anxious, but it turns out people are into that.
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? I’m hoping light rain!  I’m trying to beef up my beanie selection before the fall.  I just want to wear a beanie and drink warm coffee all rainy season.
What workshop are you the most stoked about? I’m ready to shrink some dinks! I’ve done shrinky dinks with all different age groups, and it’s always a blast.  There’s gonna be someone who’s never done it before, who’s going to be amazed by how cool it is. Â
Olympia Zine Fest 2017 tabler spotlights! I'm Neelybat Chestnut, from Mend My Dress Press located in Tacoma, Washington. Zines: Mend My Dress, Shotgun Seamstress, I never promised you a rose garden, Symbology, Fix My Head https://www.instagram.com/mendmydresspress/ http://mendmydresspress.tumblr.com
What is your favorite zine of the moment? I'm really excited about Pansy #13- Laura's layouts and crushing honesty always moves me so much.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? When I think of Olympia, I think of how I wish public transit made it easier for me to visit for a few hours. Even though it's a quick car ride from Tacoma, by bus it's long enough that I don't often make the trip.
What’s your favorite zine hack? My favorite trick is to use single pages triple folded into a newsletter style "letter" type zine to send to my close friends that live far away. Physical mail is my favorite ways to keep in touch, but living with chronic pain in my hand/arm/ect. makes it impossible for me to stay up to date on my correspondence. Photo copies save my body a lot of work, and I see those letters as a natural outgrowth of my perzine writing.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? I'm planing on dressing as Arya Stark, from Game of Thrones.  She is one of my favorite fictional characters.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Finishing a zines makes me feel like I have beaten the "let's do it tomorrow" demons, and that I have found a new way to work around/with my disabilities. That the "artist/writer" identity I have for myself still rings true. What is your weather prediction for this year's fest? weather? I'm guessing drizzle and soggy grounds.
What workshop are you the most stoked about? I'm really excited for the combating fatphobia work shop, and the suicide prevention one. I'm interested in the how to self publish your book-mostly because I love hearing how other people do things differently, sharing ideas, etc.Â
