Even Lily’s parents could sense the anticipation and nerves that had been building up in her over the past few days. It had gone unnoticed for the better part of Petunia’s stay, too many other distractions in the house to see that their youngest daughter was more restless than usual around the house, but once the attention was drawn back to Lily it was hard not to notice. Thankfully New Years usually merited a sense of excitement, so it was easy to chalk up her mood to the festivities of the night.
It was not that Lily enjoyed lying to her parents, but it was something she had surprisingly become accustomed to over the past few years. As far as they knew, she would be celebrating with Marlene and they knew not to wait up, although there wasn’t a chance her father would even make it to the stroke of midnight. She had long ago decided that leaving many of the details of her life out would be better for them, and their relationship. Although she planed on telling them about James, tonight was not the time for it. After the blowout at Sebastian’s and the conversation that followed, common sense would indicate Lily should learn to stop her deceit, but it felt necessary to carry on a few days longer.
So the mix of emotions that Lily’s parents had sensed were not due to the holiday, but instead because of the evening she would be spending with James and his family as his girlfriend. Despite the import of the night for varied reasons, Lily was surprisingly calm as the moment had come and she looked around for James near the diner they had last spoken in - the place they had promised to meet as it would have been difficult to get to the Potter house on her own.
Turning the corner, she recognized James’s silhouette instantly, his unmistakable hair and posture backlit by the bright windows behind him. Picking up her pace to meet him, Lily’s body reacted before she could think, ensnaring him into a welcome kiss that wordlessly said how much she had missed him in such a short time. Hands settled to his face as she smiled on him, she figured it wouldn’t hurt to say it either. “Merlin, Potter, I missed you.” ( @goingxstag )
