Stranger Things

It had been three weeks since Momo started this assignment. Three weeks, and she still couldn’t shake the unease that coiled in her belly as she slipped through the back door of the Lotus club. The bass pumping from the speakers rattled her bones the moment that she was inside. It was so loud that the thrum of it could be felt the next block over, and the line out front was already curling around the building despite the early hour.
It would be a busy night.
With one quick, steadying breath, Momo adjusted the strap of her bag and made her way towards the changing rooms to drop off her things. She only had fifteen minutes or so to change and get out front before her boss came looking for her-- which was the last thing that she needed. Any undue attention this early on into the job could jeopardize everything. For now, keeping a low profile was a necessity.
She was met with a chorus of greetings from the other dancers as she reached the changing room and made a beeline for her locker. Momo flashed them a bright smile as she passed the line of vanities, making a mental note of each familiar face reflected in the mirrors as she went. She made quick work of changing out of her street clothes and stashing her belongings before joining the other girls at the mirrors.
“You’re working the floor tonight, right?”
Momo met the speaker’s eyes in the mirror, pausing in her attempts to smudge her eyeliner with her ring finger. “Is it that obvious?” she asked, letting a bit of her nerves bleed into a soft laugh. These women expected Momo to be nervous about getting up on that stage-- Aria was still new to this.
The woman squeezed Momo’s shoulder as she rose to her feet. “You’ll do fine, sweetheart.” She winked. “We’ve got a full house tonight.”
